During the sinking of a Russian ship, the crew faced a critical situation when a nearby Norwegian ship refused to provide assistance.

The Russian merchant ship Ursa Major met its tragic fate in the international waters of the Mediterranean Sea, between Spain and Algeria, when it sank on December 23. News of the incident only came to light the following day, when the Spanish publication Spanish reported the details.

Amid the sinking of the ship, the Russians issued a distress call, but the result was not as expected. Oslo Carrier 3, One vessel flying the Norwegian flag, refused to take on board the crew in distress.

Even given the gravity of the situation, the Norwegians explained that the refusal to provide assistance was due to an unspecified prohibition.

The refusal of the ship Oslo Carrier 3, flying the Norwegian flag, in rescuing the crew of the Russian cargo ship, generated strong repercussions in the Russian media, which highlighted the failure to comply with international maritime rescue standards. But what do these rules say?

Violations of the International Convention on Salvage of Russian Ships

The decision by Oslo Carrier 3, which cited an “unspecified prohibition” not to embark seafarers in an emergency situation, is at odds with the Article 10 of the International Salvage Convention, 1989.

This document establishes that Ship captains are obliged to render assistance to any person in danger of death at sea, provided that such operation does not pose a serious threat to the ship itself or its crew.

Russian media highlighted that the refusal of Oslo Carrier 3 is a flagrant case of non-compliance with this rule, which aims to protect human lives in situations of extreme vulnerability in the maritime environment.

In the end, the 14 of the 16 crew do Ursa Major were rescued by the Spanish vessel Save the Dragon and taken to the port of Cartagena, Spain. The remaining two fell into the sea.

Shipwreck details

The Russian-flagged Ursa Major was en route from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok, where it was due to arrive on January 22.

The sinking was preceded by three explosions in the engine room, resulting in a 50x50 cm hole being opened in the vessel. According to the company that owns the cargo ship, Oboronlogistics, the incident may have been caused by a terrorist attack.

In addition to the Salvamar Drago, other merchant ships and a Spanish Navy patrol also participated in the rescue operations, as reported by the Spanish press.

International reactions

The Oslo Carrier 3's actions have sparked outrage in Russia, with Russian President Dmitry Peskov's press secretary calling the incident "aflagrant and deserving of total condemnation".

He highlighted the seriousness of the non-compliance with international standards and reinforced the importance of investigating the case.

Article Details 10

Refusal to perform rescue at sea is condemned by the international maritime community, as it undermines the basic principles of solidarity and assistance that underpin lifesaving standards.

O Article 10 of the International Salvage Convention, 1989 It is clear that, in dangerous situations, the priority must be the preservation of human life, even in extreme conditions.

Article 10 – Duty of Cooperation

The master of a ship in distress shall cooperate fully with the salvors during the rescue operations with a view to ensuring the success of those operations. The shipowner shall take the necessary measures to ensure that the master complies with this obligation.

The rescuer, when carrying out rescue operations, must exercise due care to avoid or minimize damage to the environment.

The master of a ship in distress, the shipowner and the salvor must each, to the extent possible, cooperate fully with the competent public authorities to prevent or minimize damage to the environment.

THIS CARE REQUIRED BY THE RUSSIANS, THEY DID NOT DO ON LAND, WHEN THEY EXPELLED MILLIONS OF UKRAINIANS FROM THEIR LANDS, SO THEY ARE A PEOPLE WHO WANT PRIVILEGES WHILE THEY MASSACRE THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD. I AM WITH THE PREVIOUS COMMANDER, THEY WILL FIND THEMSELVES ALONE.

In this line of thinking, no one is safe. What was worse was the Americans who invaded and destroyed Iraq based on blatant lies. At least NATO, the US, was confronting Russia with its expansion towards Russia's borders. In 1962, the US felt threatened and blocked the shipment of Russian weapons, they say it was a missile, to Cuba. Pepper only burns our eyes, right?

It turns out that two wrongs don't make a right, or just because a jerk somewhere raped a woman doesn't justify raping your mother, daughter or sister. Both cases would be wrong. And if you say otherwise, well, it's your family, right? I don't think you would defend it? So when Americans made a mistake in Iraq, they don't justify Russians invading Ukraine and, worse, raping thousands of women (more than 5) and kidnapping more than 15 children to be Russified (raised by Russians). I don't know of Americans raping women in Iraq, or of children kidnapped in Iraq to be raised as Americans in the United States. In fact, I don't even know of Americans shooting down commercial airplanes, like the Russians have now shot down a commercial airplane for the third time, killing innocent civilians. Anyway, the Americans are wrong about Iraq and so many other things, but the Russians, in addition to being wrong about invading Ukraine, commit crimes against humanity, against women, children and innocent civilians. Now I want to see you defend the rape of women, as I mentioned.
