Intercity Train Expansion: Beyond Campinas, New Routes on the Horizon
The TIC already has an initial line planned, which will connect São Paulo to Campinas, but the project goes further.
According to Governor Tarcísio de Freitas, There are plans to extend the line to cities such as Americana, Limeira and Ribeirão Preto, enabling greater mobility for those traveling between the capital and the interior.
In an interview with the newspaper “O Liberal”, Tarcísio revealed that routes are also being studied for Sorocaba
and Bauru, in addition to a strategic connection to Baixada Santista, facilitating access to Santos.
Deadlines and implementation steps
The first phase, connecting São Paulo to Campinas, is expected to begin operating in 2031.
The intermetropolitan train service, which will include stops in Jundiaí, Valinhos, Louveira and Vinhedo, should start in 2029, offering a practical option for those who live in these cities and work in the capital.
For the São Paulo-Sorocaba section, the auction should take place in 2025, with the contract signing scheduled for 2026.
With this new line, the trip between the two cities will take approximately one hour, reducing the current time of up to 130 minutes on highways..
It is estimated that the São Paulo-Sorocaba TIC will meet a demand of 50 thousand passengers per day.
Connections with São José dos Campos and Santos are also in the plans
In addition to Campinas and Sorocaba, TIC foresees new routes to other regions.
According to the Secretariat of Partnerships and Investments, one of the priority connections will be between São Paulo and São José dos Campos.
Known as TIC Eixo Leste, this section will take about 75 minutes to travel through the four municipalities along the route., serving an estimated population of 2,7 million people.
The investment for this route is estimated at R$ 10 billion.
Another important axis is the TIC Eixo Sul, which will connect the capital of São Paulo to Baixada Santista.
This stretch should be between 80 and 130 kilometers long, providing a journey of approximately 90 minutes and directly benefiting 1,8 million people..
In addition to improving mobility, the TIC Eixo Sul also promises to ease traffic on the Anchieta-Imigrantes road system.
Jobs and economic benefits for the population
One of the great attractions of ICT is its potential for job creation.
Only the TIC South Axis, between São Paulo and Santos, should create around 13 thousand jobs, in addition to stimulating the regional economy with the construction of new stations and railway infrastructure.
With a planned investment of R$10 billion for the entire expansion, the project is expected to boost the development of urban and peripheral areas, opening doors for business and facilitating the movement of workers between metropolitan regions and inland cities.
Next steps and challenges for the Intercity Train
While the São Paulo-Campinas and São Paulo-Sorocaba sections already have established deadlines, connections with São José dos Campos and Santos still depend on feasibility studies and private partnerships.
So far, there is no forecast for an auction or start of works for the East and South axes, according to the Secretariat of Partnerships and Investments.
Expectations surrounding the Intercity Train are high, but technical and financial challenges still need to be overcome before the project can come to fruition..
With ambitious planning and several cities benefiting, TIC has the potential to revolutionize transportation in São Paulo.

I think it is an excellent initiative. Brazil, with its size, should invest heavily in rail. Urban and intercity. For passengers and cargo.
Yes, I believe so. Congratulations Governor Tarcísio for implementing this project that will boost mobility in the state of São Paulo.
Yes definitely
I am 58 years old and a long time ago we used to go by train to Ipauçu, I remember those trips with great longing, a very pleasant experience. Nowadays, with technology and more advanced trains, it would be great to go back.
A country with a state vision and not a private one would already have a high-speed train connecting several very important cities in the state.
