Pickup truck made the equivalent of 360 round trips between NY and Los Angeles; original engine ran 640 thousand km before first change.
A 1980 Toyota pickup truck has just entered the hall of the world's most resilient vehicles: 1,6 million km driven. Documented by the High Mileage Reviews channel, the legend on wheels has belonged to the same owner for 43 years. With an annual average of 37 thousand km, the secret is in the project simple and rigorous maintenance.
The pickup truck left the factory with a 2.2-liter 20R engine and a 4-speed manual transmission. The original set ran 640 km before being replaced by a 2.4-liter 22R engine in 1983, coupled with a 5-speed transmission. The new set has already clocked 965 km, despite leaks and visible wear.
2.2L 20R engine and manual transmission
Spartan mechanics explain its durability. The first engine operated for 17 years under severe conditions, including trails and uneven terrain. The manual transmission, less complex than automatic versions, reduced failures and facilitated repairs.

The pickup truck has never prioritized comfort: the interior still has manual controls and a functional dashboard, but no air conditioning. Ventilation? Holes in the floor caused by rust. The body, already repainted twice, can still withstand off-road impacts.
How a collision turned a pickup truck into a trail machine
In 1980, a head-on collision with an MG required the installation of a roll cage. The accident cancelled the lease, but freed up the pickup for radical modifications. Since then, it has become a reference on trails, gaining fame for resistance to falls and bumps.
Outside the US, the Toyota Pickup is called the Hilux — a line with 18 million units sold since 1968. The 1,6 million km pickup is a direct heir to this legacy, which inspired the Tacoma in 1995, focused on the North American market.
