Innovation in the field of solar energy through solar cells is evolving rapidly, and one of the most promising developments is the development of transparent solar cells. In this technique, all the cell components are installed on the back, eliminating the need for opaque metal wires that normally compromise transparency. This makes the cell virtually indistinguishable from a regular sheet of glass, allowing it to be applied to a wide range of products and surfaces.

Excellence in efficiency and design

Tests carried out by UNIST scientists with the new transparent photovoltaic module, which measures 16 cm², indicated an energy conversion efficiency of approximately 15,8%. In addition, the transmittance – the ability of light to pass through material – was 20%, a significant value for a transparent material.

This combination of high efficiency and excellent transmittance makes this solar cell a promising candidate for a variety of practical applications.

The most impressive thing is that the researchers were able to use this module to charge a smartphone battery. This shows that the technology can be integrated into mobile device screens, transforming them into power sources.

Applications in various sectors

The possibilities offered by transparent solar cells are vast. In addition to smartphone screens, UNIST researchers suggest that this technology could be applied in several other areas.

Likewise, they can be integrated into building windows, allowing large skyscrapers to become sources of sustainable energy without compromising architectural design.

Another possible application is in small household appliances, such as watches and home automation devices, where transparent screens with power generation capabilities could eliminate the need for batteries or constant charging.

Professor Kangmin Lee, one of the research leaders, highlighted that this innovation could have a significant impact on sectors such as automotive, construction and consumer electronics.

According to Professor Seo, also involved in the project, his team is committed to continuing to develop the modularization of these cells, making them more accessible and ready for large-scale use.
