AI innovations shape the future of solar energy by maximizing efficiency in large solar farm construction projects.

São Paulo, September 05, 2023 – Brazil has stood out as an emerging giant on the global solar energy, positioning itself as the world's eighth largest producer of this type of energy. In such a promising environment in the renewables segment, Grupo Energia, one of the leading companies in the renewable energy market, renewable energy, is partnering with Graymatics, a global reference in multimedia cognitive processing, to bring something innovative to the sector. The ambitious plan involves implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) and drone technology to revolutionize the way large-scale solar farm projects are monitored.

Overcoming Gigantic Challenges

Grupo Energia faces the monumental challenge of managing construction of energy parks solar energy ranging from 600MW to 1.2GW, covering vast tracts of land, sometimes exceeding 6.000 hectares. Instead of conventional approaches that require frequent site visits for measurement and control, the company now benefits from capturing high-resolution images, called orthomosaics, through drones equipped with state-of-the-art cameras.

Rubens Brandt, CEO of Grupo Energia, states: “We are dealing with increasingly larger solar parks, extending over areas exceeding 2.000 hectares. Graymatics' smart farm solution allows us to have more efficient, productive and modern management, adapted to the new dimensions and complexities of our projects,” said Brandt about the applicability of this technology in the area of renewables.

AI in measurement and monitoring

Graymatics is fine-tuning data analytics and AI to provide a real-time count and measurement of physical progress at construction sites. Accuracy is improved while the time required for weekly assessments is drastically reduced. Fifteen new analytics are being developed, as part of this project, to identify and count variables such as piles, metal structures, solar panels and other infrastructure under construction.

“The accuracy of our algorithms is already more than 85% in the testing phase and normally exceeds 92% in operation. This is an unprecedented project in scale and innovation”, highlights Eduardo Vargas, Business Development Manager at Graymatics.

a look to the future

Currently, both companies enjoy an exclusive contract that covers the Brazilian market for solar power generation for the next two years. Graymatics is also exploring application opportunities for artificial intelligence in other sectors such as civil construction, industry, agribusiness and smart cities.
