Nigeria is developing a huge maritime megacity, with the potential to boost both the country and the African continent. The project, about to be completed, will offer multiple attractions for residents and tourists.
Nigeria is in the process of creating a true architectural feat with the Echo Atlantic City, which promises to be the largest maritime city in the world. This ambitious US$6 billion project not only has the potential to transform the lives of people in the region, but also to have a significant impact across the entire African continent. Designed with strategy and innovation, Eko Atlantic City aims to address and mitigate diverse challenges faced by African citizens, establishing a new paradigm of urban development on the continent.
Megacity in Nigeria has been under construction since 2008
Initially the megacity was an effort by the Nigerian government to protect Victoria Island from sea erosion, which has been undergoing a strong process for 100 years, collapsing significant parts and increasing the risk of flooding.
Other methods to prevent the depletion of land on the Nigerian coast were implemented, such as the great wall of Lagos, but they were not sufficient. In this way, the Lagos state government decided to produce this solution, which would recover lands lost to nature. Also known as the new commercial hub city, the megacity in Africa was made by adding yet another solution to Nigerians.

Its neighboring city, with one of the largest and busiest ports on the continent, is the second fastest growing in Africa, being the country's commerce capital and, consequently, is suffering from little space and a lot of pressure on inhabitants and businesspeople, who will have Eko Atlantic City as a means of owning more land for development.
Amazingly, the construction began in 2008 with the first phase, which lasted around 6 years, consisting of the marine dredging process lifting around 91 million cubic meters of sand to be used as base of the megacity, which will have an area of 10 km² above the Ocean and will be protected by an 8,5km wall, built using rocks shaped by excavators, with an accurate GPS system allowing them to work optimally underwater.
Megacity will be ready in 2026
The breakwater model, when completed, withstood the tests without showing any signs of wear and tear and the government announced that it has already achieved its objective of protecting Victoria Island.
Currently the city is not yet completely built, as some buildings promised in its project still need to be started and finished. Among those that have already started construction, a 26-story building stands out, which will be named Azure and will have 120 luxury apartments next to the first power plant and the headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The planning will include a Yacht Club and a Marina with a sophisticated atmosphere. The second phase of development of the buildings is scheduled to be delivered in two years with a sanitation system, industries for the production of their own energy and potable water along with a telecommunications network that will be connected to all homes, so the city is expected to be self-sufficient and sustainable.
Nigeria plans to reach the top 20 in the world economy ranking
With the advancement of Africa's megacity, Nigeria, which in 2021 had the 31st largest economy in the world, intends to reach the top 20 richest nations.
After a decade of completion of the construction, it also aims to have a population of 300 thousand residents and 200 thousand daily passengers, including retailers who will invest in the new city and make the economic wheels turn.
More opportunities will be given to this group, such as entertainment chains, restaurants and stores for the most varied customers, highlighting the creation of the largest shopping mall in West Africa, called Eko Atlantic Mall, which will have 107.500 square meters of built area and will be populated by the local population. , tourists and mainly by the 25 million people who live in the neighboring metropolis.
