Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump on his election victory on Thursday. In a speech that mixed admiration and pragmatism, Putin highlighted Trump's courage in facing an assassination attempt and signaled Moscow's willingness to engage in dialogue. The statement marks a significant moment in international relations, with Putin indicating openness to a new phase of cooperation between the countries.

In his first public comments since Trump's victory, Putin praised the president-elect for his "courageous and firm" stance during the July 14 assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. "He behaved, in my opinion, very correctly, courageously, like a real man," Putin said during an event in Sochi. The Russian leader took the opportunity to express his congratulations on Trump's election victory, saying the new president had shown bravery and resilience.

Putin also highlighted the difficulties faced by Trump throughout the campaign, mentioning that the Republican was “hounded from all sides”, in reference to the criticism and challenges received during his electoral career. However, he went further, stating that Trump’s comments on Ukraine and on the reestablishment of relations with Russia are “worthy of attention”. This openness to dialogue suggests that, under Trump’s leadership, the Russian government expects a less confrontational approach in diplomatic relations.

Putin believes Trump deserves attention

During the election campaign, Trump promised that he would bring peace to Ukraine within 24 hours if elected. Although he avoided giving further details about how he intended to end the conflict, which is the largest in Europe since World War II, his statement resonated in Moscow. “What was said about the desire to restore relations with Russia, to end the crisis with Ukraine, in my opinion deserves at least attention,” Putin said. highlighting the importance of a joint effort to resolve the impasse.

When asked about a possible conversation with Trump, Putin made it clear that he would be willing to meet if the future US government so desired. “I am ready to resume contact if the future Trump administration so wishes,” he declared, signaling a possible diplomatic rapprochement. The expectation is that a frank dialogue between the two leaders could contribute to regional and global stability.

Republican promises

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also commented on Trump's stance on the Ukraine crisis, saying that Putin remembers the Republican's promises, even if he considers the speed proposed to resolve the conflict to be "exaggerated." Asked about US Vice President-elect Kamala Harris' recent warning that "Putin would eat Trump for lunch," Peskov responded in a relaxed tone: "Putin doesn't eat people," drawing laughter from the audience.

These statements reveal Putin’s openness to starting a new chapter in Russia-US relations, now under Trump’s leadership. By highlighting points of convergence and extending a diplomatic hand, Putin is sending a clear message: Moscow is ready for dialogue, and Russia is closely watching the next steps of the deal. new US administration.
