Reaction to the rise of US protectionism
China's new diplomatic offensive is a direct response to signals that the United States should increase tariffs on Chinese goods. China seeks to prevent trading partners from adopting similar measures and tries to consolidate its image as a defender of the international economic order.
In addition to bilateral contacts, Wang Yi indicated that China is willing to expand the dialogue with the European Union, with the aim of strengthening economic and institutional cooperation between the parties.
“China is open to deepening exchanges with Europe and jointly preserving an open and resilient global economy,” the foreign minister said.
