Anvisa has suspended the sale of Colgate Total Clean Mint toothpaste after reports of adverse effects. Find out the reasons and the company's response!

The National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) took a drastic measure by ordering the suspension of the sale of toothpaste Colgate Total Clean Mint Throughout the national territory.

The decision, announced on Thursday (27), was motivated by reports of adverse effects in consumers, generating concern and questions about the safety of the product.

What happened?

A Anvisa, after monitoring consumer reports, identified a significant increase in the rate of adverse events related to the use of Colgate's new toothpaste.

The main symptoms reported include oral lesions, painful sensations, burning, gum inflammation and lip edema.

According to the agency, these effects negatively impacted consumers' quality of life, resulting in medical costs, time off work and difficulties with eating and communicating.

The suspicion falls on stannous fluoride, one of the components of the new toothpaste formula, which replaced the brand's Total 12 line in July 2024.

Anvisa ordered the precautionary ban on all batches of the product for 90 days, or until its safety is proven.

Colgate's response

In response to Anvisa's decision, Colgate filed an appeal, resulting in the automatic suspension of the ban on Thursday.

The company reaffirms the safety of the product, claiming that the adverse effects reported may be due to the sensitivity of some consumers to certain ingredients, such as tin fluoride, dyes or flavors.

Colgate has committed to working with Anvisa to clarify any doubts about Total Clean Mint toothpaste, reinforcing its commitment to the quality and safety of its products.

What does this mean for consumers?

Despite the suspension of the ban, Anvisa's recommendation that consumers do not use the product remains.

Those who have already purchased the toothpaste should check the process number on the secondary packaging (cardboard cartridge) to confirm whether the product is subject to the ban.

If you only have the tube, you should check for the presence of the substance “stannous fluoride” in the composition.

In the face of uncertainty, caution is essential. Consumers who experience any of the adverse symptoms mentioned should seek medical advice and report the incident to Anvisa.

This case raises important questions about the safety of personal hygiene products and the need for ongoing monitoring by regulatory bodies.

Anvisa and Colgate must work together to clarify the facts and ensure consumer safety.

We will closely monitor developments in this case, bringing you updated information on the investigations and the measures that will be taken to ensure consumer safety!
