An ancient Egyptian tomb has revealed a 'miracle' that has astounded archaeologists, shedding new light on ancient Egyptian rituals and practices.

In the ancient city of Taposiris Magna, on the coast of Egypt, archaeologists have made a stunning discovery. Beneath the ruins of a temple dedicated to the gods Osiris e Isis, a monumental tunnel was found, described by experts as a true “geometric miracle".

The structure, located 13 meters underground, was unearthed by a team led by Kathleen Martinez of the University of Santo Domingo. Carved into sandstone, the tunnel is 2 meters high and stretches for an incredible 1.305 meters, impressive in both its size and precision.

An amazing engineering feat in Egypt

The tunnel's design is reminiscent of the Eupalinos Tunnel, a 6th-century BC Greek aqueduct recognized as an engineering marvel. Despite the similarities, the function of the Taposiris Magna Tunnel remains unknown. Parts of the structure are submerged, suggesting that it may have been affected by the earthquakes that shook the region between 320 and 1303 AD, causing part of the temple to collapse.

For Martinez, who has been working in the region since 2004, this discovery could be crucial in the search for the lost tomb of Cleopatra VII, the last queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty. “This tunnel could be a promising clue”, said the archaeologist.

Taposiris Magna and the Legacy of Cleopatra

Founded by Ptolemy II around 280 BC, Taposiris Magna has a rich history linked to the Ptolemies, Cleopatra's dynasty. The temple is dedicated to the gods Osiris and Isis, figures with whom Cleopatra sought a symbolic connection. During previous excavations, coins bearing the image of the queen and Alexander the Great were found, as well as statuettes of the goddess Isis.

Burial shafts containing Greco-Roman tombs have also been discovered at the site. Some experts believe that if Cleopatra and Mark Antony were buried at Taposiris Magna, their graves may have similar features to these tombs.

The mystery continues

The next steps include exploring the nearby Mediterranean, where earthquakes have caused parts of the temple to sink. Underwater excavations have already revealed tunnels connecting to Lake Mariout, raising hopes that new secrets could be uncovered.

Regardless of whether or not Cleopatra and Mark Antony's tombs are found, researchers have already made significant progress in understanding Taposiris Magna. During the tunnel excavations, pottery fragments and a rectangular limestone block were recovered, raising hopes of further discoveries.

Zahi Hawass, former Minister of Antiquities, stated in 2009: “If we discover the tomb of Cleopatra and Mark Antony, it will be the most important discovery of the 21st century. If we don't, we have still made great discoveries inside and outside the temple.. "

The Taposiris Magna tunnel, with its grandeur and mystery, is another piece of the puzzle of this ancient city. It connects past and present, keeping alive the search for answers about one of the most enigmatic figures in history: Cleopatra VII.
