Argentina's Central Bank puts a new, higher-value note into circulation, aiming to simplify transactions in a context of high inflation.

On Thursday (14), Argentina officially put into circulation the new 20 peso note, the highest value ever issued by the country. The launch, promoted by the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA), is part of a strategy to make citizens' daily lives easier amid the impact of rising inflation.

The new banknote pays tribute to Juan Bautista Alberdi, an important figure in the country's history, while the need for higher cash denominations reflects the economic challenges faced by Argentina.

The arrival of the new 20 peso note marks a new chapter for Argentina in its fight against runaway inflation. Featuring the face of Juan Bautista Alberdi, one of the main figures responsible for the founding of republican Argentina and the creation of the 1853 Constitution, the note carries an important historical reference.

On the back, the province of Tucumán, where Alberdi was born and where the country's independence was declared in 1816, is highlighted. This design choice is part of the “Heroines and Heroes of the Homeland” series, launched by the Central Bank in 2022.

The ballot also arrives equipped with advanced technologies to make counterfeiting difficult, including holograms, a watermark with Alberdi's portrait, color-changing ink and microprints, offering greater security in transactions.

Effects of inflation

Since May, the BCRA had already tried to mitigate the effects of inflation with a 10-peso note, but constant price increases made this value insufficient, making the new 20-peso note an urgent need. At the official exchange rate, the new note is equivalent to around R$116, or US$19,64.

The launch of this new bill is just one part of President Javier Milei's economic plan. Since taking office, Milei has sought strategies to control inflation, which has reached an accumulated 107% over the year.

Helped with logistics

Despite a slight slowdown in October, when inflation fell to 2,7%, the scenario still requires measures to minimize the impact on prices and Argentines' pockets.

In addition to helping to simplify transactions, the new banknote also eases the logistics of transporting money for banks and businesses, which deal with large volumes of cash on a daily basis.

FOR ensure supply, The Central Bank has already distributed 230 million units of the new note and expects to launch another 540 million by mid-2025.

The guy has been in power for a year and many want him to solve a problem that was created and matured decades ago... Argentina, if it continues on the right path, will take decades to become an economically decent country... To think that a guy who has barely sat in a chair will solve decades-old problems is either ignorance or pure evil...
