Fixed radars on the BR-101 bypass road start operating. Find out the speed limits and how to avoid fines.
Fixed radars on the BR-101 bypass road start operating. Find out the speed limits and how to avoid fines.

One of the busiest highways in southern Brazil now has 40 new fixed speed cameras. The aim is to increase safety and reduce accidents, but the measure has already caused controversy among drivers.

If you're used to driving on busy highways, take note: a significant change is about to impact the traffic on BR-101, especially on the Greater Florianópolis Ring Road.

Behind the scenes of this movement, a new measure is being prepared and promises to cause a stir among drivers.

What's going on? Something that could directly affect the pockets of those who don't respect the rules.

The installation and activation of new fixed radars at strategic points on the BR-101 is set to be the most talked about topic among drivers who cross this region.

As announced by the Federal Highway Police (PRF), these new features could transform the experience of traveling there.

But what are the details that make this such great news for those who drive in this area? Find out now.

Activation on the Ring Road

As announced by the PRF last Monday (25), 40 new fixed radars will be gradually activated along the Greater Florianópolis Ring Road until Friday, the 29th.

Responsibility for installing and managing the equipment was assigned to the concessionaire Arteris Litoral Sul, which manages this section of the highway.

According to information released, the devices were properly calibrated by National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (Inmetro), ensuring accuracy in measurements.

This means that speed records will be accurate and fines will be issued based on reliable data, minimizing potential errors.

The provision of these radars is part of an effort to improve traffic safety and prevent accidents on one of the busiest and most important highways in southern Brazil.

However, the measure also divides opinions among drivers, who see the initiative as a mix of progress and challenge.

Why is the Greater Florianópolis Ring Road so important?

The Greater Florianópolis Bypass is a crucial alternative to divert heavy traffic that crosses the urban center of Florianópolis.

Its importance lies in the fact that it is one of the main road corridors that connect the south to the southeast of the country, serving both the transportation of cargo and the flow of tourists and residents.

Despite this, the stretch has suffered for years from problems related to excess vehicles and a high accident rate.

The installation of radars seeks to alleviate these problems, imposing strict speed limits that vary according to the type of vehicle:

  • 100 km/h for light vehicles, such as passenger cars;
  • 80 km/h for heavy vehicles, including trucks and buses.

These limits, although defined based on technical studies, generate doubts and complaints among drivers who use the road daily.

The impact of radars on traffic

The implementation of radars on highways is always controversial. For many drivers, they represent a monitoring tool that, at the same time, guarantees safety and causes discomfort.

According to experts, the benefits of speed controllers include:

  • Reduction of accidents: Studies indicate that monitored highways have fewer serious incidents;
  • Greater fluidity in traffic: Uniform speeds reduce congestion in critical sections;
  • Sustainability: Speed control can reduce the emission of polluting gases.

However, critics point out that radars are often used as a form of revenue collection, penalizing drivers with fines considered abusive.

This negative perception is reinforced by cases of poorly positioned radars or those with unclear speed limits.

Radars: allies or villains?

For the PRF and the concessionaire Arteris Litoral Sul, the radars represent an advance in road safety, especially in a region that concentrates so much daily traffic.

However, many drivers see these devices as real “financial traps”, especially those who frequently travel on the highway.

According to mobility experts, the key to ensuring that radars are effective and well-accepted lies in the transparency of operations.

Clear signage and educational campaigns are essential for drivers to understand the importance of the limits imposed.

Furthermore, technology also plays a crucial role.

Modern radars, such as those that will be activated on the Contorno Viário, use advanced monitoring systems that guarantee greater precision and reliability.

This should theoretically reduce the chances of errors and avoid unfair penalties.

What do you think about the installation of these radars? Do they really contribute to safety or are they just another way to raise money? Share your opinion in the comments!

I think this is an excellent decision, I would like to know when you will start installing Doppler radars?

This number of radars and the abusive prices is proof of the robbery of highway users.
