Resources have been allocated to expand the implementation of renewable energy projects, promoting sustainability and contributing to the fight against climate change
O National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) announced the approval of more than $ 10 billion credit for financing the National Fund on Climate Change, known as Climate Fund. These resources aim to boost the expansion of projects renewable energy in different regions of Brazil, contributing to environmental sustainability and the decarbonization of the economy.
Significant investments in renewable energy in several regions of Brazil
The distribution of resources approved by BNDES varies between regions of the country. The Southeast received the majority, with $ 4,1 billion, followed by Midwest, which obtained $ 2 billion.
No Northeast, were approved R $ 1,8 billion; at the Sul, R $ 1,6 billion; and in North, R $ million 460.

This total value represents a significant increase, “almost ten times higher” than the volume recorded in 2022, reflecting a continuous effort to intensify the energy transition in Brazil.
Growth in the Northeast
The Northeast stood out as the region with the greatest proportional growth in resources Climate Fund. In 2024, the total of R $ 1,8 billion approved for the region was 36 times higher than what was allocated in 2022, which was only R $ million 51.
The resources allocated to the Northeast will be used to expand renewable energy projects, such as wind power e solar, which should generate more 450 megawatts (MW) protocols for National Interconnected System (SIN).
This expansion is crucial to meet the growing energy demand in the region, which has seen a significant increase in its installed renewable energy capacity in recent years.
BNDES Statements
"The Climate Fund allows us to deepen this strategy of strengthening the green economy, decarbonization and environmental sustainability, especially in this scenario of global growth in climate denialism,” said the president of BNDES, Merchant Aloizio, when presenting the results.
The Climate Fund is considered one of the country's main instruments for mitigating and adapting to the effects of climate change.
The bank has committed to supporting initiatives that not only aim to reduce carbon emissions, but also promote social inclusion and sustainable economic development.
Transpetro guarantees LPG supply in the North Region
In other relevant news, the Petrobras Transport S.A. (Transpetro) reported that he was able to provide 16,6 thousand tons de liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) na Northern Region during last year's drought, the worst drought in 74 years.
LPG is widely used both for domestic use, such as in kitchens, and for energy generation in industries and agriculture.
This supply was essential to ensure the continuity of services and minimize the impacts of the drought on the population and the local economy.
Operation Codajas
The supply of GLP was carried out through the Operation Codajas, which facilitated the flow of fuels during the low tide period of the Amazon river, when navigation becomes more difficult, especially between the months of November and December.
The operation involved significant logistical efforts, including the use of vessels adapted to navigate in adverse conditions.
This project not only ensured the delivery of LPG, but also demonstrated Transpetro's ability to respond to crises and challenges related to energy supply in extreme situations.
The role of BNDES in the energy transition
the role of BNDES in promoting the renewable energy and in the fight against climate change it is fundamental.
The bank not only finances projects, but also acts as an agent of transformation, encouraging the implementation of sustainable technologies and the adoption of practices that respect the environment.
Furthermore, BNDES has been committed to creating partnerships with other institutions and entities, aiming to foster an ecosystem of innovation and sustainable development in Brazil.
Future prospects for the Climate Fund
O Climate Fund is positioned to play an increasingly significant role in the coming years.
With growing awareness of the importance of sustainability and the urgency of climate change, it is expected that more projects will be developed with the support of the fund.
The continuity of funding for renewable sources, in addition to other sustainable initiatives, will be crucial to ensuring that Brazil advances its goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting a greener future.
Considerations on energy supply in Brazil
The initiatives of the BNDES and transpetro demonstrate a joint effort to promote renewable energy and guarantee energy supply in different regions of Brazil.
Investment in sustainable projects and efficiency in fuel supply are essential to face climate challenges and ensure a more sustainable future for the country.
Collaboration between the public and private sectors will be essential to achieve sustainable development goals and ensure Brazil’s energy resilience in the face of climate change.
