Triplication of BR-277 between Curitiba and Paranaguá will reduce travel time by 20%! Works will begin in 2025 and continue until 2031.

A mega project is about to transform BR-277! The tripling of the highway between Curitiba and Paranaguá promises to reduce travel time by 20% and increase cargo transportation capacity by 66%. With R$6,4 billion invested, the highway will have new lanes, viaducts and lighting in Serra do Mar!

The long-awaited triplication of BR-277, between Curitiba and Paranaguá, promises to transform drivers' routines and bring enormous benefits to cargo transportation.

With construction work scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025, completion is scheduled for 2031.

The project, which already has financing of R$6,4 billion guaranteed by National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES), aims to significantly improve the highway infrastructure, providing a reduction of up to 20% in travel time and a 66% increase in cargo transport capacity.

The BR-277 highway, which connects Curitiba to Paranaguá and crosses one of the most challenging stretches, the Serra do Mar, will undergo a series of modifications that will benefit drivers and companies that depend on road transport.

The tripling of the lane in several sections of the mountain range will be one of the main milestones of this project, which promises to reduce traffic jams and improve safety in the region.

Investments focused on additional lanes and viaducts

In the first years of the concession contract, the largest volume of investments will be concentrated in the duplication works and the construction of additional lanes, especially in Serra do Mar, a region recognized for its complexity and high accident rates.

The works with the greatest impact will be precisely these modifications to the lanes, which will facilitate the flow of vehicles and make the journey safer for drivers.

In addition to tripling the lane, the project includes the construction of seven new viaducts and the correction of two dangerous routes.

The installation of a new escape area at km 46, on a section with a sharp curve and steep descent, will be a crucial measure to improve safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

The escape area was designed to prevent vehicles that lose control from being involved in more serious accidents, providing a safe exit at one of the most critical points on the highway.

Lighting and new security systems in Serra do Mar

Another highlight of the project is the implementation of a lighting system in a section of the mountain range, from km 31,5 to km 46,5, totaling 15 km of new installations.

This section is known for its challenging conditions, with sharp curves and limited visibility, especially at night.

The installation of lighting will be a significant advance for road safety, allowing drivers to face the journey with greater visibility and safety.

In addition, a monitoring system will be implemented to increase control over traffic and detect any incidents more quickly.

The goal is to reduce response times in emergencies, making travel safer and more efficient for everyone.

Benefits for the economy and logistics

The impact of the BR-277 works will be felt on several fronts, mainly in the local economy and transport logistics.

With improved traffic capacity and reduced travel times, companies that depend on highways to transport goods will see significant gains in terms of efficiency.

The 66% increase in the highway's cargo capacity represents a boost for regional logistics, allowing more goods to be transported with greater agility and lower cost.

Furthermore, the reduction in travel time provided by the additional lanes and the triplication will be essential to increase the competitiveness of companies operating in the region.

Drivers will also feel the positive impact of the work, with a safer and faster route through the mountains, one of the most complicated and dangerous areas of the highway.

Completion date and next steps

EPR Litoral Pioneiro, the concessionaire responsible for the works, guaranteed that the works execution schedule is being followed as planned.

The company is already preparing to begin the initial stages in the second half of 2025.

Although the contract stipulates that the work will be fully completed by 2031, the duplication and additional lanes must be completed before then, bringing progressive improvements to the highway over the next few years.

The concessionaire will soon release more details about the next phases of the works, including the start and end schedule for the different stages.

The expectation is that, as the works progress, the positive impact will be felt even more quickly, providing a more modern, safe and efficient highway.

Future perspectives for mobility and security

With the tripling of BR-277, the government and the concessionaire hope to provide an improvement not only in road transport, but also in the quality of life of the region’s residents and workers.

Increased safety, reduced accidents and increased transport capacity are just some of the benefits that the project will bring to the local community and travelers who depend on the highway.

The heavy investment in the Serra do Mar section and the innovative security measures make this project one of the most anticipated for the coming years.

With the completion of the works, BR-277 will be more efficient and safer, better meeting the growing demand for transport and travel, and promoting the economic development of the region.
