Dilma Rousseff is unanimously re-elected president of the BRICS Bank. Putin praises her management, while internal criticism increases.

Dilma Rousseff will remain in charge of the BRICS Bank for another 5 years! The former president received unanimous approval and praise from Vladimir Putin. Amid advances with China, Dilma faces internal criticism and controversy over a new currency for the bloc. The US is already threatening to tax the BRICS at 100%!

the former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) was re-elected for a new 5-year term as head of the New Development Bank (NDB), the BRICS Bank.

The confirmation took place on March 23, 2025, during the annual meeting of the China Development Forum, in Beijing.

Support for her re-election was unanimous among member countries, and the former president's term was extended until 2030, despite originally ending in July 2025.

The approval also received strong support from Russia, with President Vladimir Putin praising Dilma's work at the helm of the financial institution.

Dilma and the future of the BRICS Bank

Dilma Rousseff, since taking over the command of the NDB, has dedicated herself to strengthening the bank and implementing policies that seek to promote economic development among the member countries of the BRICS bloc.

The former president stood out by reaffirming her commitment to bilateral projects, such as the transoceanic railway between Brazil and China, a crucial initiative to cut export costs and increase competitiveness between the two powers.

Furthermore, Dilma highlighted that China, with its remarkable transformation from “the world’s factory” to a global center of innovation, represents an important reference for the other countries in the bloc, including Brazil.

In her speech, Dilma stated that the “development of the global south” is a priority in her administration and mentioned as an example the ability of Chinese companies, such as DeepSeek, to compete globally.

She stated that “it is not easy to lift so many people out of poverty, and I know that in my own country, Brazil, we are doing the same.

Equally impressive is China's transformation from the world's factory to an innovation hub, and gradually developing into a global leader in science, technology and innovation.”

Russia and support for Dilma

The relationship between the members of the bloc Brics, especially Brazil and Russia, has been solid over the years, and Dilma Rousseff's re-election as head of the NDB was widely supported by Vladimir Putin.

The Russian leader praised Dilma's work, highlighting the importance of maintaining the institution's stability, especially at a time when the bloc seeks to expand its role in global finance.

Dilma's presence at the head of the NDB also strengthens political and economic relations between Brazil and Russia, in addition to reinforcing the bloc's confidence in Dilma's policies to promote development.

“We have confidence in Dilma Rousseff’s leadership and believe that her work at the helm of the bank will continue to benefit all BRICS members,” Putin said during a ceremony in Beijing.

Internal criticism and challenges at NDB

Despite international support and unanimous approval for Dilma's reelection, her management of the NDB has not been without controversy.

Within the bank, the former president has faced internal criticism, mainly related to her rigid stance in handling certain administrative issues.

Furthermore, she has been the target of accusations of moral harassment by some members of the institution's team, which has generated divisions within the organization.

Another point of tension is the internal disagreements over the proposal to create a single currency for the member countries of the BRICS bloc.

The idea of reducing dependence on the dollar in commercial transactions between the bloc's nations is considered a priority by many leaders, including President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).

However, the proposal has generated internal resistance, especially regarding the logistical details and the feasibility of implementing a common currency.

The US reaction and economic challenges

The proposal for a single currency for the BRICS bloc countries, in addition to generating internal discussions, has also been the target of criticism from economic powers such as the United States.

The US government has already made it clear that it considers the idea a threat to the global financial system and has stated that if the project is implemented, there will be severe sanctions, with a threat of 100% taxes on transactions between countries in the bloc.

Although this measure has generated apprehension, many analysts believe that the creation of a single currency for the BRICS is a way to reduce dependence on the dollar, which could allow greater economic autonomy for member countries.

However, the proposal is not without challenges.

Significant effort will be required to address internal political and economic divergences, and also to ensure the viability of the new currency in the global market.

The impact of Dilma's reelection on global politics

The re-election of Dilma Rousseff as president of the NDB has implications beyond the BRICS countries.

The bloc, which includes emerging and developing economies, has grown in influence in recent decades.

Under Dilma's leadership, the NDB has emerged as an alternative to traditional international banks such as the IMF and the World Bank, which are often seen as dominated by Western powers.

The proposal for a single currency for the BRICS could be a reflection of a broader move towards a more multipolar global financial system, where developing countries seek greater influence.

The NDB, under Dilma's leadership, can become a pillar for this transformation, challenging the role of the dollar and promoting alternatives for emerging markets.

For experts, Dilma Rousseff's re-election for another term as head of the NDB marks an important moment for the BRICS countries and for the former president, who continues to face both support and criticism for her management.

The future of the bank, especially with regard to the creation of a single currency, remains a central topic in global political and economic discussions.

Will Dilma be able to overcome the internal and external challenges that arise with her reelection?
