The hydroelectric plant contributed 12% of the country's electricity on peak days
In a context marked by a new heat wave, Brazil witnessed a historic peak in electricity consumption last Friday, at 14:37 pm, reaching the impressive mark of 102.478 MW. This record highlights the growing energy demand in the country, which was met for the most part (92,5%) by renewable sources. Within this scenario, the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant emerged as an essential pillar for national energy security, supplying up to 12% of the load consumed in the country at this critical moment.
Belo Monte: a pillar of clean and reliable energy
The contribution of the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant, especially during periods of high demand, reinforces not only its generation capacity, but also the vital role of renewable energy sources in the Brazilian energy matrix. At peak consumption, Belo Monte reached a generation of 11.000 MW, enough capacity to supply around 60 million people, demonstrating the robustness and strategic importance of this infrastructure for the country.
Positive impact on the national energy system
Belo Monte's performance on record day illustrates its significant contribution to meeting Brazil's energy needs, especially at critical times. With a production of 6.500 MW during peak load, the plant alone was responsible for around 6% of the country's total demand, equivalent to the demand of 35,5 million people. This scenario reiterates the role of hydroelectric plants in complementing energy generation, especially in times of lower generation from intermittent sources.

The record of successive energy consumption records in the country, especially since November last year, highlights the growing demand for electricity in the face of heat waves. In this context, Belo Monte stands out not only for its generation capacity, but also for contributing to the sustainability of the energy system. The plant helps maintain reservoir levels in the Southeast region, reducing the need to activate more polluting energy sources.
The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Power Plant, therefore, not only plays a crucial role in maintaining Brazil's energy security, but also emphasizes the importance of clean and renewable energy as fundamental pillars for the country's sustainable future. With its operation, Belo Monte demonstrates that it is a key player in the national strategy for facing the challenges posed by increased energy demand, while promoting environmental conservation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
