Brazil's first offshore hybrid boat, CBO Wiser, received a battery bank, using diesel and electric energy and promises a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

Equinor, together with CBO and Wärtsilä, has finalized the hybridization project for the CBO Wiser vessel. This hybrid vessel received a battery bank, allowing the combined use of diesel and electrical energy, leading to a potential hybrid boat of CO2 emissions. THE integration of this technology represents an important advance in the search for more sustainable solutions in the offshore sector.

Furthermore, these innovations are expected to have a considerable impact on global emissions. The hybridization project, which transformed a traditional offshore boat into a hybrid vessel, is an example of the possible synergy between different technologies. The CBO Wiser, now as a hybrid boat, symbolizes a crucial evolution, pointing to a future where reducing pollutant emissions is increasingly realistic and attainable.

Hybrid Vessel Initiative in Brazil

The hybrid boat, of the PSV (platform supply vessel) type, underwent an important transformation with the installation of a battery bank. Now, this hybrid boat uses both diesel and electric power in its operations. With this innovative initiative, a significant reduction in the CO2 emissions of the hybrid vessel, reaching up to 30%. This pioneering project is a milestone for Brazil.

'Brazil plays a crucial role in Equinor's strategy. Here, we are able to significantly advance our mission to reduce CO2 emissions globally. The conversion of this hybrid vessel is a tangible example of this goal. Through projects of this type and other similar initiatives, we will continue our journey towards carbon neutrality by 2050′, says Paulo Henrique Van Der Ven, Director of Shared Operations at Equinor in Brazil.

Collaboration and Pioneering

The collaboration between three companies enabled the CBO Wiser to become the first hybrid vessel in Brazil to carry out this type of installation. Furthermore, it is only the second vessel in hybrid propulsion operating in the offshore oil & gas segment. The first hybrid vessel, the PSV Delta Commander, began operations in December 2023, also serving Equinor in the Bacalhau field.

PSV type vessels play a vital role, transporting supplies and equipment from the mainland to the offshore units required to operate the assets. Equinor, an international energy company committed to a future of low carbon, leads these advances.

The Importance of Equinor and Its Projects

With a diverse portfolio that includes oil, gas, renewables and low-carbon solutions, Equinor is the leading operator on the Norwegian continental shelf and the largest supplier of gas to Europe. In Brazil, a strategic country for the company, Equinor's growing portfolio includes assets in oil and gas (O&G) and renewable energy.

In the O&G sector, the company has projects under development, such as Raia and Bacalhau, as well as assets in production such as Peregrino and Roncador. In relation to renewable energy, Equinor has solar energy projects, with the Apodi and Mendubim solar plants in operation.

The Future of Renewable Energy in Brazil

In 2023, Equinor acquired Rio Energy, a leader in onshore renewable energy in Brazil. This acquisition complements the company's ambitions to strengthen its presence in the country's renewable energy market. The acceleration of these projects is a clear demonstration of Equinor's commitment to moving towards sustainability and carbon neutrality.

The hybrid vessel initiative, such as hybrid boat, hybrid ship, and hybrid vessel, is just one facet of Equinor's ongoing efforts to innovate and lead the transition to a more sustainable, low-carbon future. This commitment is clearly reflected in the company's actions and strategic direction, prevailing in all its operations.
