The Brazilian Army has reinforced its arsenal with FGM-148 Javelin missiles, advanced US technology that played a crucial role in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Check out the details of this acquisition!

The Brazilian Army is close to finalizing the purchase of hundreds of new FGM-148 Javelin missiles, US technology manufactured by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin. The arrival of the weaponry should happen almost four years after Brazil made the first purchase order for the technology from the US. Understand how the new FGM-148 missiles can further modernize the Brazilian Armed Forces.

US technology to equip 1st Mechanized Anti-Tank Company

The FGM-148 Javelin missiles were essential for Ukraine to stop the Russian offensive at the beginning of the war, in 2022. According to the Army commander, General Tomás Miguel Ribeiro de Paiva, the Brazilian Army is in negotiations and the US technology will arrive next year or in 2026.

The new FGM-148 Javelin missiles are to equip the 1st Mechanized Antitank Company (1st AC Mec Company), inaugurated on the 16th by General Tomás, who announced the purchase of the new weapon.

He also reported that the Land Force should, after completing tests with two prototypes, close a contract to purchase 98 Centauro II-BR tank destroyers. Tomás was accompanied at the unit's headquarters by the then military commander of the Southeast, General Guido Amin Naves, and by his successor, General Pedro Celso Coelho Montenegro. According to Tomás, the Brazilian Army had been looking for this US anti-tank technology for a long time and has now managed to obtain it with three types of material.

Other new missiles acquired by the Brazilian Army

The commander listed the new FGM-148 Javelin, Spike LR2 and Max 1.2 AC missiles. The US technology is a portable anti-tank missile with infrared guidance, that is, it uses a fire and forget system, which can hit targets up to 4 meters away.

Brazil had submitted the first purchase request in 2021, however, only at the end of 2022, the US government authorized the sale.

As a result, the Brazilian Army ended up first acquiring the Israeli Spike LR-2 missile, whose delivery was also delayed and only arrived in the country this year. The equipment uses the so-called fire, observe and update system with the help of AI.

With it, the operator can choose to manually control the flight from start to finish or lock the target using AI. In this case, it is still possible to make adjustments to the flight until impact.

According to the commander, these new missiles offer the Brazilian Army the ability to protect against vehicles, something very important for any conventional troop in the world. Attached to the 11th Mechanized Infantry Brigade, the 1st AC Mec Company must have the capacity to be transported to any part of the national territory by the KC-390 aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force.

Brazilian Army is increasingly equipped with new technologies

In addition to the new FGM-148 Javelin missiles, the brigade is also expected to receive the future Centauro II-BR armored vehicles. Manufactured by the Italians of Iveco-OTO Melara Consortium (CIO), the armored vehicle's turret is equipped with a 120 mm cannon.

This is an Armored Cavalry Combat Vehicle (VBC Cav), the purchase of which is part of the project to modernize the country's armored forces. When it enters into operation, it will be the most powerful vehicle of its kind in South America.

It should also gain an anti-aircraft battery. According to Tomás, this brigade is expeditionary and the Brazilian Army has an airmobile brigade and a mechanized brigade ready to act anywhere in Brazil. The commander added that the first Centaurs should arrive in 2027 to Brazil.

And daddy sweetening the soldiers' beaks so they'll be happy with new toys. But you told the truth, now the PF lends itself to this type of service. Ideological Police? In my opinion, imposing fear to end freedom of expression.

I would love for the technology to come from Brazil, but from the Americans, I'm wary when things come from there, they're like locusts, they eat everything from other countries and want everything for themselves to sustain their luxuries.

The contract for the supply of Spike-LR2 missiles has not suffered any delay. It has been fully fulfilled within the agreed deadlines.
