Learn more about the future of rail transport in Brazil and how the arrival of the bullet train between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro can impact the country's mobility and economy, in addition to opening up new opportunities.
Brazil is preparing to implement a new era in rail transport.
In a revolutionary project that promises to transform mobility between the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the bullet train, with speeds of up to 320 km/h, will connect the two metropolises, offering a faster and more efficient travel option.
According to TAV Brasil CEO Bernardo Figueiredo, details about the cost of the work and tickets have already been confirmed, and the project is expected to begin operations in 2032.

The project is under the supervision of National Land Transport Agency (ANTT) and was made official in March 2023.
With an extension of 417 km, the bullet train will have four main seasons: Sao Paulo, Sao Jose dos Campos, Volta Redonda and Rio de Janeiro.
In addition to these, there will be intermediate stations at Guarulhos, Jacarei, Taubate, Aparecida e rezende.
The expectation is that more than 25 million passengers are transported annually.
Infrastructure and connectivity
The bullet train will be integrated into existing urban transport systems, with planned connections with the Intercity Train (TIC) from São Paulo, which will begin operating in 2031, in addition to connections with São Paulo Metro Line 6 (Orange), CPTM Line 7 (Ruby) and Santa Cruz Branch, from SuperVia in Rio de Janeiro.
These interconnections aim to optimize passenger mobility and facilitate access to the bullet train from different regions.
Innovation is not limited to transportation infrastructure. TAV Brasil predicts that the bullet train will have a significant economic impact, with an investment of $ 60 billion for the construction and operation of the project.
Furthermore, the impact on Brazil's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) could reach R$168 billion by 2055, driving the generation of 130 thousand direct and indirect jobs and contributing with R$ 46 billion in taxes.
Ticket prices and economic viability
Ticket prices have already been set. The fare for the full journey between the two cities will be R$500 with R$1.000 for round trips.
For those who opt for shorter routes, such as São José dos Campos or Volta Redonda, the ticket will cost R$250 for outward and R$500 for round trip.
These prices, although higher than those for buses, are competitive with air tickets., but with the advantage of being a land transport, faster than buses, which take about six hours to cover the distance between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
TAV Brasil also has a strategic plan to recover its investment: real estate development around future railway stations, which can generate additional revenue of $ 27,3 billion.
This strategy is based on the Cheonan and Asan's successful model, in South Korea, where the development of a new city around the train station has created an urban hub with 600 thousand inhabitants.
Expropriation and impacts on the real estate market
The construction of the railway will require the expropriation of real estate, a process that should begin in December of this year.
According to Figueiredo, TAV Brasil may negotiate with landowners to mitigate expropriation costs and develop areas that will benefit from railway operations.
The company is considering purchasing private land for real estate expansion, which can reduce the financial impact and encourage growth in regions along the train route.
International partnerships and financing
The project is in the negotiation phase to secure the necessary financing.. According to Figueiredo, the TAV Brazil is in talks with Chinese, Spanish companies and Arab funds to make the viable $ 60 billion necessary for the work.
These companies have experience in building high-speed lines and are offering complete packages that include equipment, construction and operating systems..
Figueiredo also revealed that TAV Brasil is looking for the support from the Brazilian government to speed up the licensing and expropriation process, which is essential for the project to get off the ground.
The government has already been formally asked to classify the bullet train as a priority, which can speed up the processing of processes and ensure that the project becomes a reality in the shortest possible time.
Sustainability and environmental impact
Another crucial point of the project is its sustainability process. TAV Brasil guaranteed that the bullet train will have a considerably lower CO₂ emissions compared to other means of transportation such as cars, buses and airplanes.
The carbon emissions savings will be equivalent to a forest area of 225 km² per year,
which corresponds to the size of the municipality of Recife, in Pernambuco.
It reducing emissions could represent a significant step forward in the fight against climate change, since high-speed transport tends to be more energy efficient.
Timeline and future prospects
The timeline for project completion is underway, with TAV Brasil predicting the completion of technical studies by the end of 2026 and the start of works in 2031.
The works should last approximately a year and a half, with the opening scheduled for 2032.
TAV Brasil expects that, by the end of 2035, the operation of the bullet train will already be a consolidated reality and that it will continue to expand its routes in the future.
