BYD King arrived recently and is already dominating the sedan segment. Chinese model has great differences and leaves rival Toyota Corolla “in the dust”.

When Chinese automaker BYD launched the BYD King in the Brazilian automotive market, it became clear that its main competitor would be the Toyota Corolla Altis. Last July, just the sedan's second month on the market, the BYD King already surpassed its competitor in sales numbers. In total, 593 units were sold, 571 of the GS version and 22 of the GL version.

Differences between Corolla and BYD King

The hybrid Toyota Corolla Altis registered 348 units. The sedan is sold in two versions, namely the Altis, for R$ 187.790, and Altis Premium, sold for R$198.890, as well as the BYD King in GL (R$ 175.800) and GS (R$ 187.800). It is important to mention that the BYD King is currently rivaled only by the hybrid version of the Toyota Corolla, which is not a plug-in hybrid like the Chinese model.

The hybrid Toyota Corolla is what we currently call a full hybrid (HEV). In this configuration, the sedan receives a 1.8 aspirated flex combustion engine with 101 horsepower and 14,5 kgfm of torque, combined with a 72 hp electric motor, which is supplied by a 1,3 kWh battery. It is battery does not require external recharging, but does not offer a minimum autonomy in electric mode only.

The BYD King is known as PHEV, as it is a vehicle that has a hybrid package, which requires external recharging for the 8,3 kWh and 18,3 kWh batteries, which offer 32 km and 80 km of autonomy in the GL and GS versions, respectively.

BYD King delivers up to 26 km of autonomy with just one liter

The Chinese sedan, in its most expensive GS version, comes equipped with a 1.5 hp 110 gasoline engine, combined with an electrical package, one engine as a generator and the other as a traction engine. Together, they can deliver up to 235 horsepower.

Already most basic version can reach 209 hp of power. Using the hybrid system, the BYD King can reach 26 km/l. However, according to Inmetro, without the help of the electrical package, the situation of the Toyota Corolla's rival changes.

The King GL can achieve 16,8 km/l in the city and 14,7 km/l on the highway using gasoline. The GS version reaches 16,3 km/l in the city and 14,3 km/l on the highway. The rival Toyota Corolla Altis and Altis Premium can achieve 12,8 km/l in the city and 11,1 km/l on the highway using ethanol and 18,55 km/l in the city and 15,7 km/l on the highway using gasoline .

The Toyota Corolla has a 43-liter fuel tank, guaranteeing a range of up to 795 km with one fill, while the King has 48 liters and offers up to 806 km with just one tank.

Learn a little about the Chinese sedan

Speaking of the size of the model, the BYD King is 4.780 mm long, 1.840 mm wide, 1.490 mm high and 2.710 mm wheelbase, figures very similar to its Japanese rival.

In terms of appearance, the sedan has a much sportier feel than the Toyota Corolla. At the front, the headlights are very sharp and have an LED strip that unites the pair, similar to that seen on the BYD Dolphin. At the rear, the sedan also has an LED strip that connects the lights.

Inside the vehicle, the seats are in light tones, there is LED ambient lighting and a transmission position selector, as well as a 15,6-inch rotating multimedia screen and an 8,8-inch digital cluster.
