Did you know that a huge project is taking place in California? Construction of the Delta Tunnel Project is in full swing and promises to change water management in one of the most important states in the United States.
With an astronomical budget worth 20 billion dollars, this construction will divert water from two of California's main rivers – Sacramento and São Joaquim – to a reservoir. From a distance? Something comparable to a trip from the capital to Santos, in Brazil. It's a lot of water and a lot of money involved!
The idea of the Delta Tunnel Project is not new. California has faced serious water shortages for decades. Just to give you an idea, Los Angeles had the driest year in 126 years of measurements in 2013. This is serious, guys!
After many studies, public consultations and bureaucracy, the project received final approval in 2020. And since 2021, construction has been underway. Oh, and it's worth remembering that the completion date is only in 2035. Long, right?

- Bricklayers out of work? Construction has begun on the world’s first 3D-printed hotel in the Texas desert, with 43 rooms and 18 residential homes all created by a giant 3D printer
- Forget steel and concrete! Wooden buildings are taking over the world and promise to revolutionize civil construction

What happens in the construction of the project?
We are talking about two underground tunnels, each 56 km long and 12 meters in diameter. They will carry water from the rivers to the Bethany Reservoir, which feeds the pumping plant in the South Bay near Livermore. In addition to the tunnels, the project includes new pumping stations, control and monitoring systems and all necessary infrastructure to make this water reach those who need it.
Of course, a project of this size is not easy. The geology of the region is complicated, with fragile soils that can cause headaches when excavating. Additionally, managing water quality during construction is crucial, as any mistake could affect millions of Californians.
Sustainable innovations
The Delta Tunnel Project is not only grand, but also sustainable. It includes efficient pumping systems that save energy and reduce carbon emissions. What's more: there are plans to integrate renewable energy as solar and wind. Cutting-edge technology to take care of the environment, check it out!
In addition to solving a major supply problem, the project will generate thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction. A giant economic boost for California!
The construction of the Delta Tunnel Project is a monumental project, full of challenges and innovation. It will transform California's water management and could serve as a model for other regions of the United States and the world
