CATL, the world's largest battery manufacturer, surprises the aviation industry with its new battery technology for electric planes

Today we go talk about something new that is shaking up the world of aviation: CATL's new aircraft battery. Known for its batteries for electric vehicles, the Chinese giant is now taking aim at the skies with a revolutionary technology that promises to transform electric planes.

CATL, the world's largest manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles, is expanding its horizons and is now focusing on the aviation industry. The Chinese company announced a significant advance in its battery technology, with the aim of creating electric planes capable of flying hundreds or even thousands of kilometers.

NEW CATL aircraft battery

CATL's electric plane project has an expected launch window between 2027 and 2028. The goal is to have aircraft that can fly between 2.000 and 3.000 km (approximately 1.200 to 1.800 miles) on a single charge. This could revolutionize regional travel, offering short to medium-haul flights without the need for fossil fuels.

CATL has already successfully completed a test flight with a smaller, 4-ton electric aircraft, proving the viability of the concept. The next step is to scale up to a larger 8-ton aircraft capable of reaching these impressive distances.

Revolutionary technology

The secret behind this project is CATL's new condensed battery technology. These batteries have an energy density of up to 500 Wh per kg, storing twice as much energy as current electric vehicle batteries. This advancement is crucial for powering larger aircraft and enabling long-distance flights.

CATL isn't just retrofitting car batteries for planes. They are working closely with industry experts to ensure these electric aircraft meet the most stringent safety standards for passenger transport.

Strong partnership

CATL is united with COMAC, the Chinese state-owned commercial aircraft manufacturer. This strategic partnership combines CATL's battery expertise with COMAC's aircraft design and manufacturing experience, accelerating the development of viable commercial electric aircraft.

If successful, this technology will not only revolutionize aviation, but could also be applied to electric vehicles, increasing autonomy and efficiency. CATL expects these new-generation batteries to be ready for mass production by the end of 2023, potentially boosting the electric vehicle industry.

CATL's new aircraft battery promises to be a game changer for the aviation industry. With its long-haul potential and collaboration with COMAC, CATL is poised to transform the future of air travel. So, what did you think of this news? Will we see electric planes dominating the skies soon?
