A new measure surprises drivers and promises peace of mind with the renewal of warranty on cars that have not undergone maintenance at dealerships, leaving many questioning the impacts of this action.

A Chevrolet announced an important after-sales measure that could benefit a large number of vehicle owners of the brand, especially owners of Onix and Onix Plus.

The manufacturer has decided to extend the warranty on the oil-bathed timing belt used in the 1.0 and 1.0 turbo three-cylinder engines, even for those cars that have not undergone servicing at dealerships.

As a result, owners of these vehicles will have the same 240.000 km warranty as cars that have undergone authorized maintenance.

The extended warranty is valid for the current generation of Chevrolet Onix and Onix Plus, including units manufactured from the 2019/2020 model year onwards.

The good news is that there is no requirement for mileage or that the revisions have been carried out at the brand's dealerships.

This decision comes after a move by the automaker to reinforce its commitment to its customers and improve confidence in the use of its technological components.

The measure was anticipated by the portal Segredos Cars.

The action aims to increase consumer confidence and provide peace of mind to those who own a used car.

According to the manufacturer, the warranty renewal is a commercial strategy to ensure that owners of Onix and Onix Plus models can count on the durability of the timing belt without worrying about the lack of maintenance history.

Chevrolet highlights that, when carrying out the technical inspection and changing the lubricant and filter, the customer will have the warranty renewed up to the vehicle's original 240.000 km.

How warranty renewal works

The promotion, which runs until the end of 2025, is available to all customers who wish to renew their oil-bathed timing belt warranty.

To participate, simply take your vehicle to a Chevrolet dealership, where a technical inspection will be carried out to check the condition of the system.

In addition to the review, the engine's lubricating oil and filter will be changed, which costs R$660.

If problems are detected during the inspection, such as defects, excessive wear or contamination on the belt, the part will be replaced at a promotional price of R$700, a value much lower than the normal cost, which can reach up to R$6.000, considering labor.

This cost reduction applies to all cars that are evaluated until December 31, 2025.

GM reinforces the importance of strictly following the guidelines on the type of oil to be used.

The company highlights that the correct oil to ensure the preservation of the oil-bathed timing belt is ACDelco Dexos 1GEN3.

Using the wrong lubricant can compromise the life of the belt and cause serious damage to the engine.

What are oil-bathed timing belts?

Oil-immersed timing belts were developed with the promise of offering greater durability and efficiency to modern engines.

This type of belt is an alternative to traditional metal chains, which, although more durable, are heavier and noisier.

Oil-bathed belts are lighter, quieter and can last up to 240.000 km, making them a more attractive option for today's cars.

However, improper use of oil and additives can seriously impair the performance and longevity of this vital engine component.

Oil-bathed belts have an estimated durability of between 60.000 and 100.000 km, but this depends directly on the correct maintenance of the system.

If the oil is not changed regularly or if the wrong product is used, the belt can suffer severe damage, compromising engine operation and generating high repair costs.

Furthermore, using lubricants with inadequate properties can cause the belt to swell, deteriorate or even break, releasing pieces of material that can clog the engine's oil ducts.

This type of failure can lead to overheating and engine melting, which, without a doubt, represents a great risk to the integrity of the vehicle and to the owner's pocket.

The impact of inadequate maintenance

Chevrolet is not the only manufacturer to face challenges related to the incorrect use of lubricants in oil-immersed timing belts.

In many cases, vehicle owners, including fleet operators and car rental companies, choose to use cheaper oils with different specifications than those recommended by the manufacturer.

While the initial cost of an oil change is lower, the long-term damage can be much more expensive.

Oil-immersed timing belts require specific oils, with the right viscosity and additives that ensure adequate lubrication and protection.

When these oils are not used, the belt can become damaged more quickly, which can compromise the entire engine timing system.

Additionally, problems with lubrication can also affect other parts of the engine, leading to failures that are more complex and expensive to resolve.

Alternatives and solutions

Due to the risks associated with inadequate maintenance, Chevrolet decided to offer this warranty renewal for all cars that had not yet undergone maintenance at an authorized dealership.

The measure aims to reassure consumers, especially owners of used vehicles, who may have difficulty accessing a complete vehicle maintenance history.

This action reflects the brand's concern in preserving customer trust and ensuring the durability of its products.

Furthermore, by providing a free and low-cost technical inspection for replacing the timing belt, the manufacturer offers a solution that helps to avoid serious failures and excessive repair costs.

The measure was well received in the market, especially by those who are concerned about the longevity of their car, without having to bear high unexpected costs.

For those who own a Chevrolet Onix or Onix Plus with a 1.0 or 1.0 turbo engine and want to take advantage of this opportunity, The recommendation is that you look for a dealership of the brand as soon as possible.

The warranty renewal action is in effect until December 31, 2025, offering enough time for owners to regularize the situation of their vehicle.
