Imagine a market dominated by automotive giants, where few believed in the rise of a newcomer.

That's exactly what happened in July 2024, when the BYD King, a plug-in hybrid sedan imported from China, surpassed the Toyota Corolla in sales, shocking experts and consumers.

This unexpected movement affected the structures of the Brazilian market, revealing the strength and growing acceptance of Chinese vehicles in the country.

In the month of July, the BYD King registered an impressive 593 registrations, catapulting it to third place among the best-selling midsize sedans in Brazil, behind only the Corolla and the Nissan Sentra.

The domain in hybrid versions

The biggest surprise, however, was in the hybrid versions: the BYD King overtook the Toyota Corolla, which sold 348 units of the Altis Hybrid and Altis Premium Hybrid versions, revealing a growing preference among Brazilians for the Chinese sedan.

BYD King details

Imported from China, the BYD King is offered in two versions: GL and GS, with prices ranging from R$175.800 to R$187.800.

In 2024, the model already has 671 registrations, a significant number that demonstrates the success of the car in the Brazilian market, especially considering that its launch only took place in June.

BYD King engine performance and efficiency

Under the hood, the BYD King has a powerful package that sets it apart from its competitors. The model is equipped with a 1.5 hp 110 gasoline engine, combined with an electric motor that can reach up to 235 hp in the GS version.

The combined power in the GL version is 209 hp, while torque varies from 316 Nm in the GL to 325 Nm in the GS. With an average consumption of up to 25,6 km/l and autonomy that can reach 1.200 km, the King offers a performance that attracts those looking for economy and efficiency on long trips. The electric range is also impressive, reaching 80 km in the GS version, according to tests carried out by Inmetro.

BYD's success is not limited to King

But BYD's success isn't limited to King. The Song Plus SUV, also from BYD, recorded 2.139 units sold in July, accumulating 12.176 registrations in the first seven months of the year.

This solid performance puts BYD in the spotlight in the national market, with 38.540 vehicles sold so far in 2024, more than double last year's total sales, which were 17.889 units.

Leadership in the electric vehicle segment

When it comes to 100% electric vehicles, BYD is not left behind either. The Chinese brand has already sold 25.692 units of electric models in 2024, 3.350 in July alone, consolidating its position as one of the leaders in the sustainable vehicle segment in Brazil.

A change in Brazilian consumer preferences

This scenario shows a significant change in the preferences of the Brazilian consumer, who appears to be increasingly inclined to consider alternatives to traditional brands.

BYD King's performance is a clear sign that the market is open to new possibilities, and the numbers don't lie: the presence of Chinese vehicles in Brazil is increasingly consolidated.

The big question now is: how far can BYD reach in the Brazilian market? Will other Chinese brands follow the same path and dominate the national automotive scene in the coming years? Leave your opinion in the comments!
