Dell announced on Monday that it will cut about 6.650 employees, totaling 5% of its staff, due to a moment of falling sales in the computing market and fears of recession in the US.

The company had already implemented cost-cutting measures, such as a hiring break and also travel limits, trying to deal with the post-pandemic collapse in computer sales.

However, all these changes “were not enough”, according to Jeff Clarker, co-chief executive, in one of the memos to employees.

“What we do know is that market conditions continue to deteriorate into an uncertain future,” Clarke said. Dell expects to account for layoff-related costs in the fiscal fourth quarter, which ended in January. 

"It was only a matter of time before the wave of layoffs in the technology sector reached Dell, given the company's sensitivity to consumer and business confidence," says Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Susannah Streeter.
