Have you ever imagined a gas station with self-service and without the need for attendants? This is the proposal of deputy Kim Kataguiri with a new PL that could cause the dismissal of 500 employees across the country

The federal deputy, Kim Kataguiri, (DEM-SP) presented a bill (PL), which seeks the dismissal of all Brazilian gas station attendants, ending the profession. A Provisional Measure (MP) 1.063 authorizes the direct sale of ethanol between plants, service stations and loyalty to the fuel station banner. The new bill also seeks adaptations at gas stations.

PL seeks modernization after the dismissal of gas station attendants

A bill intends to end the role of attendants at gas stations, replacing employees with the alternative of self-service.

The deputy, who was taken to Brasília shortly after leading demonstrations that took place in Brazil led by the Movimento Brasil Livre (MBL), says that with the dismissal of gas station attendants, the idea is to make fuel prices cheaper and also modernize the stations, making that is similar to the modality that occurs in the United States.

Therefore, with the deputy's PL, gas stations would have to adapt to the self-service process, which dispenses with the work of attendants. The deputy claims to recognize that the PL may bring dismissals as a result, but claims that there is a discussion with industry categories so that the “installation” goes through a process of change, which could last about 5 years.

According to Kim, it is true that the main cost of fuel is not only linked to the operation at gas stations, but also to the dollar and taxation. However, there is no doubt that if the PL optimizes the costs of a station by firing gas station attendants, it could have a positive impact on gasoline prices. The deputy says that now it is necessary to join with the workers' union precisely to elaborate a transition phase, so that nothing is abrupt and so that there is no immediate adoption.

Gas station attendants fear the acceleration of the PL and the future dismissal of at least 500 employees

Despite the deputy's allegation about future layoffs, there is a strong fear among gas station attendants' associations. In some social networks, category workers fear that the PL will advance unemployment.

Around 500 workers occupy the sector in Brazil. Recent data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) indicate that the country has 14,4 million unemployed people. In addition, the current job market is still looking to recover from a recent crisis that occurred due to the pandemic.

PL seeks to end a law that has been in force for more than 20 years

A report published in early September by Valor Econômico, discloses data that show the severity of unemployment in the current scenario. About 6 million unemployed people in Brazil have been without work for more than a year.

Of this total, 3,8 million seek vacancies for more than two years. The law that obliges the existence of attendants at gas stations has been in force for 21 years. At the time, the law was created precisely so that gas station attendants' jobs were guaranteed. The deputy's bill is expected to be voted on at the end of September.
