Towards efficiency and sustainability: Effective from January 1, 2024, the innovative model promises to revolutionize the railway dynamics of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges. Discover the details of the new Single Wagon loading system
According to the Port Technology International website, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is revolutionizing its rail traffic with an innovative operating model for Single Wagon Cargo. This ambitious project aims to create a neutral system accessible to all interested parties, providing significant advantages in efficiency and sustainability process.
Railport Antwerpen, responsible for implementing this new model, recently launched a competition process that now reveals the winners. This Single Wagon Cargo initiative is just the first step towards a more efficient and better offering for everyone involved in transportation rail.
Sustainable advantages: Efficient wagon synchronization and the revolution in rail traffic
The Port highlights that efficiency and sustainability will be driven by better synchronization of wagon deliveries and collections, combined with optimization within the port region. With the introduction of this Single Car Load model, longer trains will replace the need for numerous short trains, promoting a more efficient approach. organic farming and economical for rail transport.

Nils van Vliet, CEO of Railport, expressed his satisfaction with the results of the Single Wagon Cargo model and emphasized the importance of support from industry and freight payers. He highlights that collaboration is essential to make significant changes and that the project does not stop here, with plans to monitor quality and accelerate the digitalization of the process.
The first and last mile revolution: Easing access for rail operators and freight payers
Railport strategically divided the port into zones based on aggregated volumes, thus optimizing operations. The bidding for the first and last mile in each zone aims to make this traffic more accessible to train operators and freight payers. This concept reduces fragmentation and increases transparency about the goods transported.
Freight payers can enter into first and last mile agreements with selected rail operators, even those that did not participate in the initial bidding process. This innovative regulation will come into force from 1 January 2024, promising a significant change in the railway dynamics of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.
