The Joaquim Nabuco Foundation (Fundaj) is a public foundation under private law linked to the country's Ministry of Education. Based in Recife, Pernambuco, it was founded in 1949 with the aim of preserving the historical-cultural legacy of Joaquim Nabuco, focusing on the North and Northeast regions. It has been chaired since January last year by professor Márcia Ângela Aguiar, professor of the postgraduate program of the pedagogy course at the Federal University of Pernambuco.

Conceived by sociologist Gilberto Freyre in 1947, the foundation was created as the Joaquim Nabuco Institute for Social Research, in honor of the abolitionist politician who, in 1949, celebrated the centenary of his birth.

After temporarily settling in a rented building, in 1949 it finally settled in its definitive and current headquarters, at Avenida 17 de Agosto, n 2.187, Recife. Its first director was José Antônio Gonçalves de Mello. The foundation maintains the following cultural spaces in Recife: Museu do Homem do Nordeste, Galeria Baobá, Cineteatro José Carlos Cavalcanti Borges, Galeria Vicente do Rego Monteiro, Galeria Massangana, Galeria Waldemar Valente, Sala Mauro Mota, among others.
