Senator Josh Hawley proposes bill to ban the use of Chinese AI in the US, focusing on DeepSeek, sparking debate over national security and technological competitiveness
Senator Josh Hawley recently introduced a bill that aims to severely restrict the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies developed in China, with a particular focus on the DeepSeek system, an emerging competitor in the AI market.
The bill, which proposes strict measures against the promotion of AI capabilities within China, stands out as one of the most aggressive actions ever taken against chinese technology. If approved, it could result in severe bans and even prison sentences for those who violate its provisions.
The content of the Bill
Hawley's proposal states that any “technology or intellectual property” originating in China cannot be imported into the United States.
- Revolution in education: free artificial intelligence courses that are transforming careers in Brazil
- Technological advances in healthcare: The role of artificial intelligence, RNA therapies and robotics in the evolution of diagnostics and treatments in 2025
- Startup Harumi Transforms Processes into Power for Large Companies with AI and Mathematics

Those who violate these restrictions could face up to 20 years in prison, as well as severe fines that could reach $1 million for individuals and up to $100 million for corporations.
Ben Brooks, an AI researcher at Harvard University, described the project as “easily the most aggressive legislative action on AI" until now.
The fact that the bill was introduced at all, despite being shelved shortly afterward, suggests a heightened sense of urgency in the U.S. Congress about controlling artificial intelligence and the growing threats to national security and the economy.
Hawley's proposal is a direct response to the rapid growth of technologies such as DeepSeek, a Chinese AI system that is gaining prominence globally and which, according to analysts, could put US economic interests at risk.
DeepSeek and the Rise of Chinese AI
Recently launched, DeepSeek stood out by matching the performance of American technology giants.
Its rapid rise has raised concerns in Congress, particularly due to the efficiency with which the platform's AI chatbots operate, using fewer resources compared to Western alternatives.
This efficiency raises heightened fears that US tech companies are wasting billions on AI investments when smaller-scale alternatives could deliver similar or even better results.
Additionally, the impact of AI on the military and surveillance technologies has fueled concerns about China's interests with DeepSeek.
Lawmakers warn that if strict restrictions are not put in place, the use of this technology could further transfer Chinese military capabilities, something that would become a significant risk to US security.
LOL the paper tiger 🐯 is in decline and now it has finally appealed, technological ****. LOL suck it uncle San.
