With rising solar energy prices, Eletrobras expands its presence in the free market and invests in new strategies to strengthen itself in the sector!
After three years of historically low prices, Brazil's energy market is undergoing a surprising turnaround. Eletrobras, one of the giants in the electricity sector, has already noticed this new trend and is moving to make the most of the opportunities that arise with the appreciation of energy.
Changing scenario: from stability to volatility
Between 2022 and mid-2024, the energy prices were at minimum levels, varying between R$60 and R$70 per megawatt-hour (MWh).
However, throughout 2025, the sector witnessed a significant turnaround, with values reaching an impressive R$330/MWh at certain times.
- Minas Gerais attracts R$387 million in investment for the construction of 14 solar energy parks
- Residential solar energy prices rise in Brazil, but are still cheaper than in 2024
- Researchers create solar coating that can be applied with inkjet to surfaces such as backpacks, cell phones and even cars
- GoVerde will invest R$9 billion in a methanol, green ammonia and solar energy factory in Bahia; project foresees up to 24 thousand jobs
This change took many people by surprise, including those within the market itself. “There was a false sense that the system was balanced. For more than two years, prices remained at the floor, and many believed that this would last forever,” commented Eduardo Haiama, CFO of Eletrobras.
Contracts for energy supply in 2026, which at the beginning of 2024 were negotiated at R$155/MWh, are now over R$200/MWh, reflecting the growth in demand, changes in supply and the greater volatility in the sector.
Eletrobras positions itself for growth
With this increase, Eletrobras sees a unique opportunity to expand its business. The company still has a significant volume of energy available for trading on the free market.
By 2025, between 2% and 18% of its generation capacity remains uncontracted. In 2026, this number rises to 20% to 32%, and in 2027, it could reach 46%.
Itaú BBA highlighted this movement in a recent report, pointing out that “with the rise in energy prices, Eletrobras may have accelerated its sales during the first quarter of 2025.”
To strengthen its operations, the company structured a sales team in São Paulo, one of the main hubs of the free energy market in Brazil.
The strategy has already borne fruit: the number of customers jumped to 660 contracts, a growth of 65% compared to the end of 2023.
The future of energy and the expansion of renewable sources
The appreciation of energy does not happen by chance. energy transition globally, the need for more flexibility in supply and the increased demand for renewable sources, such as solar energy, are factors that directly impact the sector.
The free energy market is expanding rapidly, paving the way for companies like Eletrobras to expand their horizons and diversify their businesses.
The growth in the commercialization of solar energy in Brazil reinforces this trend, allowing greater competitiveness and innovation in the electricity sector.
Although Eletrobras has not yet released exact forecasts for the coming months, analysts indicate that the company may be entering a cycle of strong profitability.
With a more aggressive strategy and a close eye on new market opportunities, the company is positioning itself as one of the main players in the national energy sector, ready to grow and consolidate itself as a reference in the energy market in Brazil.
