Renewables – Engie will buy renewable energy from producing plants under long-term contracts, in an electronic auction

The company that operates in the generation and distribution of electricity, natural gas and renewable energy, Engie, will hold two electronic auctions, to acquire the future production of renewable energy plants, in long-term contracts. The auctions will take place in October on the dates of the 13th and 15th. The company did not say how much energy it intends to contract in the auctions.

Engie is following the new trend in the energy market in Brazil, competing with state-owned companies such as Cemig and Copel, purchasing energy from plants to be built by third parties. The company said in a statement that they will sign 5- and 15-year supply contracts. Engie did not say how much energy it intends to contract in the tenders.

On the 13th, it will acquire “incentivized” energy from wind or solar projects in the period 2023 to 2037, that is, the right to enjoy a 50% discount on grid usage tariffs, which guarantees the generation of renewable energy. In a note, Engie says that “This event is aimed at companies that have generation projects under development, implementation or operation”.

In the second auction, on the 15th, the company also aims to purchase energy "incentivized", but not limited by the source, which makes room for wind and solar power plants, as well as biomass plants and small hydroelectric power stations.

In the second event, companies registered with the Chamber of Electric Energy Traders (CCEE) can participate, such as generators, self-producers and traders, and the term of the contract is from 2022 to 2026.
