The third nuclear power plant in Angra dos Reis, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, is at a standstill, and its construction should resume at the end of 2021
The Federal Government sent an official letter to Eletrobras about a new Provisional Measure (MP), published this Wednesday (02) in the Federal Official Gazette. MP 998/2020 makes it possible for private operators to explore the future Angra 3 nuclear power plant and, consequently, to resume work on it.

A MP 998 / 2020, edited by the Ministry of Mines and Energy, allows the National Council for Energy Policy (CNPE) to authorize the management of the plant by granting a grant. In addition, it also deals with the updating of the laws on the assets of the Union under the administration of Eletrobras.
According to the MP, the decision takes place to “promote the valorization of the country's nuclear energy resources, preserving the national interest”. After contracting, the private agent for the Angra nuclear power plant must guarantee the supply of energy for a minimum of 40 years.

Eletrobras stated that there will also be, as provided for in the MP, the adaptation to the energy price of “the possible gains that may occur during the competitive process of contracting suppliers for the completion of the works of the enterprise”.
The Angra 3 nuclear power plant will become the third plant of the Central Nuclear Almirante Álvaro Alberto (CNAAA). The expectation is that in commercial operation, the new unit will have a power of 1.405 megawatts, that is, enough energy to supply the cities of Brasília and Belo Horizonte during the same period.
The provisional measure still needs to be approved by the National Congress within a maximum period of up to 120 days. The Angra 3 nuclear power plant, located in the south of Rio de Janeiro, is at a standstill, and its construction should resume at the end of 2021, with the expectation that the works will be completed by 2026.
