The pioneering renovation of the drillship ODN I mobilized more than 600 workers at the shipyard
Rio de Janeiro, August 10, 2023 – In an unprecedented feat in the Brazil's maritime industry, the Rio Grande Shipyard (RS) has just completed the maintenance of the drill ship ODN I, by Foresea. With more than 600 workers mobilized, the innovative operation lasted 66 days.
The ODN I, an imposing vessel measuring 240 meters in length, belongs to the foresea, a renowned company in the offshore drilling. Since work began, the ship has been ashore for two months, undergoing an exhaustive repair and modernization process.
The Unprecedented Maintenance Challenge
Preparation and Planning
O Rio Grande Shipyard, owned by Ecovix, prepared a special plan for the drillship, including the construction of a custom berth. Ricardo Ávila, Ecovix's operational director, explained the challenge: “It was something never done before, both for the client and for the shipyard. Our biggest hurdle was finding technical manpower to work on short notice. But after three months of preparation, the results were very positive”.

Now, ODN I is heading to Rio de Janeiro, where it will spend another month to complete the review. During this time, important equipment will be reinstalled and materials needed to restart operations will be shipped. Gioppo reinforces: “We are ready for a new contract, maintaining the standard of excellence and safety that defines Foresea”.

Interventions in 63 Wells
The ODN I is part of the five owned offshore drilling rigs operated by Foresea. Over the past 10 years, he has worked in various deep and ultra-deep water fields, having intervened in 63 wells.
Cutting-edge Technology
Equipped with a DP-3 dynamic positioning system and MPD pressure drilling technology (Managed Pressure Drilling), the ODN I can operate at depths of up to 3,048 meters. Its ability to drill production, injection and exploratory wells with high complexity, safety and precision is one of the most advanced, reaching depths of up to 12.195 meters.
