With the arrival of the brand Self Confidence and the V8 engine, GWM is definitely paving the way to establish itself as a major player in the high-performance automotive segment.
GWM (Great Wall Motors), China's largest privately owned automaker, has just taken a major step forward in its quest to challenge European auto giants. The brand has unveiled its first V8 engine at the Shanghai Motor Show, which is intended to power vehicles luxury and compete directly with brands such as BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-AMG.
Although it does not yet have a specific car to use the engine, GWM is creating a new luxury brand, the Self Confidence, which will be positioned above the existing Wey. This V8 engine promises to be a major addition to the brand's portfolio.
GWM's V8 engine
GWM's V8 engine is a 4.0 biturbo with the “hot V” configuration, a design adopted by renowned brands such as BMW, Porsche and Mercedes-AMG.

In this configuration, the air flow is reversed: admission occurs through the external sides of the engine, while the exhaust gases are directed to the central part, where the two turbos are located.
This arrangement allows for a faster and more efficient engine response, optimizing the performance and immediate response of the turbos.
The V8 will be paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission, developed internally by GWM, which is already used in the automaker's longitudinal engine models, such as the Tank 300 SUV.
The gearbox, together with the transfer case, indicates that the engine will be used in 4×4 vehicles, expanding the possibilities of performance and versatility.
What to expect from GWM's V8?
While GWM hasn't released the exact power the V8 engine will be able to generate, expectations are high.
The Chinese automaker has already demonstrated its potential with the Tank 700 plug-in hybrid, which combines a 6 V3.0 biturbo engine with an electric motor and a 9-speed gearbox, reaching 523 hp and 86,6 kgfm.
With the new V8 engine, GWM promises even more impressive performance, surpassing these numbers. The expectation is that this engine will deliver more than 523 hp, solidifying GWM's entry into the luxury segment.
The brand Self Confidence
The V8 engine is part of a larger strategy by GWM, which is developing the Self Confidence, a new brand that will be above the Wey line, already consolidated in the Chinese market.
The intention is to directly face the main European competitors, offering a luxury product that combines high technology and performance.
In addition, GWM also revealed that some of the models in the Tank line, such as the recently launched Tank 300 in Brazil, could be equipped with the new V8 engine.
While GWM has yet to reveal all the details about the V8 engine and its plans for it, it's clear that the automaker is willing to surprise the market.
