Gerdau wins, for the second consecutive year, the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. Recognition for GHG emissions management practices in scopes 1, 2 and 3.
Gerdau, leader in the steel sector in Brazil, was once again awarded the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program. This achievement highlights the company's constant commitment to sustainability and the reduction of polluting gas emissions. Obtaining this Seal twice in a row highlights Gerdau's continued commitment to following strict environmental standards and promoting innovation in the steel sector.
This achievement entails an important reconhecimento of advanced practices greenhouse gas emissions management adopted by the company. Furthermore, the transparency in the emissions inventory carried out by Gerdau strengthens its image as a responsible organization aligned with international sustainability standards. More than an award, the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program demonstrates that Gerdau is at the forefront of environmental initiatives in the steel sector.

Maximum Qualification Level and Transparency in Emissions Inventory
Organizations that achieve the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program reach the highest level of qualification and transparency in the inventory of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The result, released on Wednesday (21), corresponds to the 2024 cycle program, reflecting both national and international respect and confirming the credibility of GHG emissions data from scopes 1, 2 and 3 from the company.
Voluntary Adhesion and Public Emissions Registry (RPE)
Participation in the program is voluntary, occurring through the Public Emissions Registry (RPE). According to Cenira Nunes, general manager of the Environment at Gerdau, 'the Company is continually advancing in its journey of learning and implementing practices for managing greenhouse gas emissions, seeking to reduce these gases in its operations. Reaching the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program confirms our commitment to transparency and demonstrates that we are on the right path to building a more dynamic and sustainable horizon.'
Monitoring of Emissions and Innovations at the Ouro Branco Unit
A fundamental action for this achievement was the continuous monitoring of emissions at the Ouro Branco (MG) unit. This monitoring is now carried out online at the thermoelectric plant (CTE) and has also started to be carried out daily in the coke oven and in the carbochemical sector, in addition to being implemented in blast furnaces.
The Ouro Branco unit, which is Gerdau's largest steel production plant in the world, has an innovative initiative to seek alternatives to reduce the use of mineral coal, using eucalyptus biomass and sawdust husks as fuel for blast furnaces.
Positive Impact of Biocoque and Future Goals
In 2023, this plant reached 2% in the use of biocoke, equivalent to approximately 30 thousand tons of biomass. This prevents the emission of more than 90 thousand tCO₂e, contributing positively to the management of greenhouse gas emissions and the transparency of the Company's emissions inventories.
Currently, Gerdau has one of the lowest average GHG emission intensity (CO₂e), with 0,91t CO₂e per ton of steel, a value that is around 50% lower than the global average for the sector, of 1,91 tCO₂e per ton of steel, according to worldsteel. The Company's goal for 2031 is to reduce emissions to 0,82t CO₂e per ton of steel.
Independent Verification and Classification of Inventories
Gerdau's inventory was verified by an independent company and then underwent evaluation by the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program team. Inventories can receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Seals, depending on the completeness and transparency of the data reported.
The monitoring of emissions at the Ouro Branco (MG) unit, carried out online at the thermoelectric plant (CTE), was crucial for obtaining the Gold Seal of the Brazilian GHG Protocol Program, highlighting Gerdau's commitment to emission management practices. greenhouse gases and the continuous quest to be a reference in sustainability and innovation in the sector.
