Germany faces possible labor shortage due to population decline, if large-scale immigration is not promoted in the coming years. According to a study released this Tuesday (26) by the Bertelsmann Foundation, and reported by UOL, the German labor market could suffer a reduction of up to 10% in the workforce by 2040. To avoid this scenario, the country will need to intensify the entry of foreign workers, which should generate thousands of new jobs in strategic sectors, such as health, technology, construction and logistics.
Job vacancies in Germany expected to reach 288 as labor shortages mount
The German workforce could fall from the current 46,4 million to 41,9 million. It is estimated that by 2060 this reduction will reach 35,1 million. The study on the labor shortage was authored by Alexander Kubis, from the Institute for Labor Market Research and Vocational Training (IAB), in Germany, and Lutz Schneider, from the Coburg University.
The research is based on data from the Federal Institute of Vocational Training (BIBB). To prevent this from happening, according to the study's conclusion, Germany would need to receive an influx of job openings for 288 qualified foreign professionals per year in order to fill vacant positions due to the aging population.

According to the study, but in a more pessimistic projection, it would be necessary to fill 368 thousand vacancies in Germany per year until 2040. In the current scenario, Germany is already experiencing a shortage of labor, especially in areas related to nursing, technology, construction and logistics.
According to Bertelsmann migration expert Susanne Schultz, speaking to the DW website, the departure of baby boomers from the labor market presents major challenges. The solution, in the expert's view, is to reduce obstacles to worker immigration.
Germany's initiatives to promote future jobs for foreigners
It is worth mentioning that in 2023, the German government relaxed some rules with a focus on opening up vacancies in Germany for foreign workers, in order to reduce the time and bureaucratic obstacles for a qualified professional to obtain a work visa in the country. At the time, the German Minister of the Interior, Nancy Faeser, even said that the new immigration law is the most modern in the world.
Another way to overcome the labor shortage and generate job vacancies was the creation of Chancenkarte (Opportunity Card), launched in June of this year.
The card allows a residency scheme in the country for professionals from outside the European Union who want to look for vacancies in Germany. On the other hand, the Bertelsmann Foundation highlights that foreign workers will not come to Germany “without a more welcoming culture on the part of local authorities and companies” and without “the prospect of staying in the long term”.
The problem of labor shortages currently affects practically all member countries of the European Union, which are faced with the same challenge: how to fill the lack of professionals for jobs in an increasingly elderly population?
To keep their economies moving, many countries are turning to attracting foreign workers and opening up jobs for foreigners, even those with a strong anti-immigration stance. It is estimated that about two-thirds of small and medium-sized European companies cannot fill the shortage of professionals.
