Detran changes the CNH: new law will come into effect in January 2025. The driver's license will have new categories and validity by age, and Brazilian drivers need to prepare themselves so as not to be caught by surprise!

Approved by Detran, the new law that changes the National Driver's License (CNH) brings significant changes for Brazilian drivers, with new requirements that promise to impact their daily lives behind the wheel. In effect from January 2025, the reform creates subcategories for automatic vehicles and modifies the validity of the CNH according to the age of the drivers.

End of the single CNH, check out the new categories and deadlines by age

The new guidelines, introduced by Law 7.746/17, reflect innovations in the automotive sector, establishing the creation of a subcategory for automatic vehicles. The division of category B into two subcategories – B1, for exclusively automatic vehicles, and B2, for automatic and manual vehicles – aims to qualify drivers according to the type of vehicle with which they have the most experience and safety.

For current carriers of B category, the transition will be gradual. These drivers will be able to continue driving vehicles weighing up to 3.500 kg, with up to eight seats, without the need for immediate adaptation. This change seeks to improve driver training without imposing abrupt demands on those who already have a license.

Specialized course requirements for specific categories

Another point of the new regulation involves specialized courses for drivers who wish to operate vehicles designed to transport cargo or passengers. These courses will include practical and theoretical content, focused on safety and advanced driving techniques, requiring more preparation for those seeking to drive vehicles in specific categories.

Validity of the driver's license according to age group

The new rules also bring changes to the validity period of the CNH, now defined by age. Drivers under 50 years of age will have a validity of 10 years; between 50 and 70 years of age, the period is reduced to five years; and, over 70 years of age, the CNH will be valid for three years. This measure considers the need for periodic medical examinations according to age group.

Mandatory refresher courses every five years

Furthermore, the law requires drivers to take refresher courses every five years, ensuring that they remain aligned with safety practices and updated traffic rules. This refresher process is especially important for renewing specific categories, reinforcing the commitment to safer driving.

Safety and alignment with technological advances

These changes follow global trends that aim to meet technological advances and the growing demand for automatic vehicles. With the creation of an exclusive category for these vehicles, Brazil is preparing for a gradual transition that puts driver safety and preparation at the forefront.

But. A person aged 50 and over is considered young to retire, but is old to drive.
What a contradiction, it's a joke @

A person over 50 years old cannot drive because they are old, but when they retire they are considered young.
Stop! No! The person can't pretend they need to renew their license every 3 years and they are forced to retire when they are already dying.

Excellent idea since with so many automatic cars a specific category helps to improve traffic with more safety.

Unfortunately, this will not change anything in terms of traffic safety. Speeding, poorly executed overtaking, lack of inspections and others are what kill us on a daily basis.

Ridiculous but a trend to delay the lives of Brazilians

These sons of ****, to help, they do nothing, but for **** the people find a way to do everything, now I ask, does this law apply to politicians too? They should make a law so that politicians do not travel at the people's expense, they should pay their expenses out of their own pockets, after all they have too much salary and too little capacity.
