To everyone's dismay, other streaming giants, such as Max and Disney+, are also expected to follow the same strategy later this year!
O Procon of Paraná has decided to go against one of Netflix's most controversial policies: charging a fee for sharing passwords between users. In a recent lawsuit, the entity classified the measure as abusive and illegal, asking for its annulment. But, as if the controversy were not enough, other platforms such as Max and Disney+ are also preparing to adopt the same strategy, generating even more dissatisfaction among subscribers, according to the website olhardigital.
Procon takes action against Netflix
In an unprecedented initiative, Procon of Paraná decided to take a stand against the Netflix. The entity registered, last Monday (2), an action to overturn the password sharing fees that the streaming giant has implemented. The measure, which began to be adopted in Brazil in May, requires subscribers to pay a extra fee of R$12,90 for each profile shared outside your residence.
According to Procon, the charge is seen as illegal and abusive, violating consumer rights. In addition, the process is also based on a fine of R $ million 11, already applied by the Procon of Minas Gerais to Netflix in July, for the same reasons. The case is now being tried in the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais, and the expectation is that this battle will continue.

Other platforms will also adopt the measure

If you thought this controversy would be exclusive to Netflix, better get ready. Following the same steps, both the Max as much as Disney + have already announced that they will soon ban password sharing on their platforms. The reason? The financial loss caused by the “smart guys” who share accounts.
Warner Bros. Discovery's global streaming president JB Perrette confirmed that the Max will begin implementing password restrictions as early as 2024, as an attempt to reduce losses recorded in the last quarter. And the Disney +? Well, if you are a subscriber to Disney's platform, get ready, because the end of password sharing is scheduled for September 2024.
The impact on subscribers' pockets
In addition to sharing restrictions, subscription prices are not escaping this wave of changes. In the case of Disney +, the prices of subscriptions to the platform, Hulu and ESPN+ will also increase. In other words, in addition to not being able to split the bill with friends, you will also have to pay a little more to continue binge-watching your favorite series.
Netflix remains silent
So far, the Netflix has not officially commented on the lawsuit filed by Procon do Paraná. However, it is expected that the company, which has faced constant criticism since the implementation of the measure, will adopt a firm stance to defend its strategy. After all, password sharing has been a controversial topic in the world of streaming, and it seems that the platforms are willing to face resistance from users.

Therefore, this battle between streaming platforms and subscribers promises to have many more chapters. What remains to be seen is whether, in the end, these measures will actually generate the expected financial impact or whether consumer dissatisfaction will lead to a turnaround.
