Tecon Santa Clara: Sustainability in the spotlight with a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions, decarbonization strategy and efficient logistics.
Tecon Santa Clara has distinguished itself by achieving a significant 55% reduction in CO2 emissions, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable practices in logistics. The decarbonization strategy adopted by Tecon Santa Clara is a testament to its dedication to the environment. By implementing innovative logistics solutions, the company not only reduces its carbon footprint but also increases the efficiency of its operations.
At the heart of its operations, Tecon Santa Clara serves as an important container terminal in Rio Grande do Sul, promoting greener alternatives for cargo transportation. The use of inland navigation has allowed more than 32 thousand tons of carbon to be reduced, highlighting the terminal's efforts to achieve high sustainability standards. Ongoing commitment to innovation and environmental responsibility sets Tecon Santa Clara apart as a leader in the logistics terminals sector.
Tecon Santa Clara’s Sustainable Efforts
Committed to sustainability in its operations, Wilson Sons, a leading company in port logistics and maritime terminals in Brazil, achieved an unprecedented feat in the logistics terminal sector through Tecon Santa Clara, located in Rio Grande do Sul. With an innovative approach, the company developed a methodology for calculating greenhouse gases aligned with the Brazilian Greenhouse Gas Program. This methodology was submitted for validation by SGS, a world leader in inspection, verification, testing and certification, consolidating its importance in the port and maritime logistics sector.

Emissions Reduction at Tecon Santa Clara
Using this method, Wilson Sons measured the greenhouse gas emissions of the loads passing through the waterway terminal in Triunfo, revealing an impressive 55% reduction in emissions when compared to road transport. This result underlines the company’s continued dedication to adopting ESG practices, contributing significantly to port logistics and maritime transport in an integrated and sustainable way.
The comparative study between river and road transport modes, on the route from Tecon Santa Clara to Tecon Rio Grande, found that in road transport of containers, CO2 equivalent emissions can reach 0,196 tons per TEU, representing more than double that observed in river transport. The calculation considered a barge with 90% occupancy, reflecting the terminal average.
Commitment to Decarbonization
Since 2009, Wilson Sons has focused on ten goals of the UN Global Compact, committing to decarbonization initiatives in the port and maritime logistics sector. The results of this study are considered a milestone in cargo transportation in Brazil, highlighting Tecon Santa Clara among the efforts to reduce emissions and promote multimodality, supporting customers in achieving their sustainability goals, with cleaner logistics operations.
Cleiton Lages, environmental manager at Tecon Rio Grande, says that since the start of operations, more than 32 tons of carbon emissions have been avoided thanks to inland navigation. This modality has proven to be a crucial partner for companies in their decarbonization strategies, demonstrating the vital role of Tecon Santa Clara in this context.
Advantages of Water Transport
Water transport has stood out for offering greater efficiency in operational costs, in addition to being notably cleaner and safer. Projects of this nature not only ensure competitiveness from a logistical point of view, but also reduce the risk of accidents and damage to customers' cargo, while reducing emissions of gases that are harmful to the environment. Tecon Santa Clara is a leader in this aspect.
Recognized as the first logistics operator in Brazil to undergo comparative auditing, Tecon Santa Clara is a reference in the search for decarbonization, an essential challenge for logistics and other economic sectors. SGS's collaboration ensures greater security and credibility for the sustainability initiatives of these companies.
Container Handling and Recognition
Resins, wood, frozen food products, rubber and household goods make up 80% of the cargo handled by Tecon Santa Clara in containers. These products, intended for import, export and cabotage, originate from/destination to cities such as Farroupilha, Carlos Barbosa, among others. After eight years of operation, the terminal was highlighted by the Ministry of Infrastructure, winning awards for efficiency in container handling in private terminals.
Starting with a barge from Navegação Guarita in October 2016, the partnership between Wilson Sons and Braskem revitalized Pier IV of the terminal, promoting waterway transportation between Triunfo and the Port of Rio Grande. In 2018, capacity was expanded with another barge, totaling four trips per week. Recently, Tecon Santa Clara's operational capacity increased by 33%, with the entry of the 160 TEU barge Guaíba, replacing the previous 120 TEU barge.
