In times of growing environmental crisis, Brazilian educational institutions have mobilized to offer educational alternatives that address contemporary challenges.

And in University of São Paulo (USP) has just surprised us with an innovative and free opportunity: an online course on art and the climate emergency, with no exams required and a certificate of completion.

With a focus on raising awareness and encouraging critical thinking, the course promises to appeal to everyone from educators to students and those interested in better understanding the complex interactions between culture and climate change.

With 500 vacancies open, registration for the free extension course is now available and will continue until November 20, 2024.

Offered by USP's Museu Paulista, the course is an initiative that reflects the university's commitment to accessible and relevant education.

Founded in 1895 and popularly known as the Ipiranga Museum, the Paulista Museum is not only a cultural and historical center, but also a space for the production of knowledge.

Housing a vast collection that chronicles important moments in Brazil's history, the museum fulfills its role by offering new perspectives on the impact of climate change on society, aligning itself with contemporary debates.

What is the aim of the course?

Aimed at educators, students and the general public, the course aims to explore climate change from an artistic and multicultural perspective.

The central idea is to present the climate crisis as not just an environmental phenomenon, but also as a cultural and historical issue that requires a collective change of mindset.

According to USP, the curricular structure was carefully designed to encourage participants to rethink history and society through art and new possible imaginaries.

The course will last a total of 6 hours, spread over two days, and will cover topics such as “Narratives and counter-narratives” and “Cities and climate emergency”.

The proposed methodology is interactive and aims to problematize historical and artistic representations of climate issues and social.

Course schedule and methodology

The course schedule is divided into two main modules:

Day 1: Narratives and counternarratives

  • Discussion on historical narratives and the coloniality of knowledge;
  • Critical analysis of image representations;
  • Review of images and their role in constructing the story;
  • Remixing ideas and creating new imaginaries.

Day 2: Cities and climate emergency

  • Reflection on the monoculture of thought and extensive urbanization;
  • Debate on the climate crisis seen as a cultural crisis;
  • Openness to diverse perspectives, integrating multiple cultural views;
  • Proposal to “reforest the imagination” with the support of art.

Classes will be broadcast on YouTube, offering flexibility and convenience so that participants can follow the course from anywhere.

According to the organizers, the content will be presented by professors and experts in climate and culture, bringing a critical look at the role of art as a tool for raising awareness of environmental emergencies.

Why is art essential in the debate about the climate crisis?

Throughout the course, participants will have the opportunity to understand how art can be a powerful ally in the fight against climate change.

According to the USP Paulista Museum, the Contemporary art has the unique ability to raise awareness, inform and mobilize people, creating a favorable environment for dialogue and action.

In this sense, the course offers a renewed vision of the role of museums and cultural institutions in the construction of new imaginaries, which consider a more sustainable and inclusive vision of the world.

Furthermore, art is presented as a means of questioning the historical and colonial constructions that have shaped the way we understand the environment and our relationships with it.

The course aims to promote critical thinking on these issues, encouraging participants to reflect on the role of museums in creating alternative and inspiring visions for the future.
