Since Law 14.071/2020 came into effect in 2021, the use of low beam headlights during the day on single-lane highways has raised doubts and, for many drivers, problems. Despite the main objective being to increase road safety, the changes in the headlight law confuse many drivers and cause penalties that could easily be avoided. Almost four years after the implementation of the law, many still do not master the new rules, resulting in fines and loss of points on their driver's license.

The law requires the use of low beam headlights on single-lane highways, regardless of location, i.e., both in urban areas and in rural areas where visibility is critical. On these roads, headlight illumination helps to avoid collisions, especially on roads where there is no physical separation between the lanes, such as guardrails or medians. On the other hand, on dual-lane highways – those with a clear division between the directions – the daytime use of headlights is no longer mandatory.

Specific Requirements:

Single-lane highways: dipped headlights mandatory during the day.

Dual-lane highways: daytime use of headlights is not required, as the structure of the road reduces the risk of collisions.

It change aims to provide additional security where it is most needed, ensuring that vehicles become visible on sections of roads that present a higher risk of accidents.

Penalties for failure to comply with changes to the lighthouse law

For drivers who do not comply with the law, the price is quite high. The infraction is classified as medium and results in a fine of R$130,16, in addition to adding four points to the driver's license. These sanctions aim to raise awareness about the importance of visibility on the roads, especially in regions where the risk of accidents is high.

The impact of an infraction goes beyond the monetary value; each point on the driver's license brings the driver closer to having their license suspended, which implies serious disruptions in the daily lives of those who depend on the vehicle.

How can drivers adapt to changes in the traffic light law?

To avoid fines and maintain safer traffic, drivers must prioritize understanding the rules in force. Measures such as refresher courses and frequent consultations with official traffic channels can be useful to ensure compliance with legislation.

Recommendations for Drivers:

Constant updating: drivers must keep up with changes in the rules and familiarize themselves with best practices.

Refresher courses: ideal for reviewing legislation and understanding how to apply it in everyday life.

Consultation of official platforms: always up-to-date information on the law and its practical application.

In addition to avoiding penalties, compliance with the rules is part of a collective effort to reduce accidents and create a more harmonious environment on the roads.

New technologies and alternative solutions

With the evolution of automotive technology, new alternatives to the use of traditional headlights are being incorporated, such as daytime running lights (DRL). These lights, already present in many modern vehicles, ensure daytime visibility without the need for low beams. Therefore, vehicles equipped with DRLs are exempt from the use of low beams on single-lane highways, offering greater convenience and a practical alternative to comply with legislation.

Changes to the lighthouse law came to increase safety and reduce the risk of accidents on Brazilian roads. For drivers, being well informed about the specifics of the new rules is essential to avoid unnecessary penalties and, at the same time, contribute to safer traffic. Staying aware of technological innovations in the automotive sector also helps to simplify compliance with the legislation, ensuring a smoother experience on the roads.
