Discovery could position the US as a world leader in the production of the “white gold” disputed among countries

A change of scenery that can challenge the current leadership of countries like Australia and South American nations is the discovery of a significant lithium reserve in Arkansas. Currently, the United States represent only 5% of global demand for lithium, a number that proves insufficient to meet the accelerated growth of the electric vehicle industry. Therefore, this new discovery may revolutionize the country's ability to meet this growing demand, in addition to contributing to energy security and economic independence, according to the Olhar Digital website.

The race for lithium extraction

Recently, the news of the discovery attracted the attention of several companies, more ExxonMobil stands out as the main candidate for extracting the mineral. The oil giant plans to start operations in 2027 and has already carried out exploratory drilling in the region. Additionally, we bring ExxonMobil announced its ambition to become a supplier of lithium for electric vehicles, having acquired drilling rights over a 485 square kilometer area within the Smackover Formation.

To access the lithium-rich saline waters, located about 3.000 meters deep, the company intends to use traditional drilling techniques. However, to maximize extraction efficiency, it will be necessary to develop a new technology known as Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE). This method involves using chemical solvents or filters to separate lithium from water. One of the main benefits of DLE is that it can consume less energy than conventional mining methods.

Environmental concerns in the US

although of the promises of technological and economic advancement, lithium extraction is not without its challenges. As a result, the United States government must consider the environmental impact of extraction before approving any operation. Issues related to water use, pollution and environmental degradation are concerns that need to be carefully evaluated.

Additionally, we bring The race for lithium raises questions about the sustainability of the mineral's production. With the increase in demand by electric vehicles and the need to transition to cleaner energy sources, the balance between the exploitation of natural resources and environmental protection will be fundamental.
