After two hours of rowing, Adrián felt an unexpected blow to his back that threw him upward, causing him to close his eyes and prepare for the impact. When he opened his eyes again, he realized he was inside the mouth of a whale.
“I felt a slimy texture brushing against my face. At that moment, I thought it could be a predator, like an orca, but I realized I wasn’t being attacked,” Adrián revealed.
The sensation, although frightening, was more of surprise and curiosity than of an actual attack. The whale, which was probably just passing by, quickly moved away, and the young man had the opportunity to return to the surface, where he was rescued by his father.
A rare and surprising incident
Adrian’s father, Dell, didn’t know what was happening until he saw his son emerge from the sea. “When I turned around, I didn’t see Adrian. I was worried, but then I saw him emerge from the sea. Then I realized that a large body that looked like a whale was there,” Dell said.
The incident was captured on video by Dell, who was filming the trip with a camera attached to the kayak. This footage brought to light the true magnitude of the situation.
Although the whale did not act aggressively, the experience was terrifying, and Adrián had the chance to reflect on his good fortune. “I felt like I had been given a second chance. At the time, I thought I might die, but I realized that I survived something that was quick but very intense,” he said.
Humpback whale: get to know the species
The animal that surprised the Simancas was a humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae), one of the largest and most fascinating species of whales.
Known for their enormous pectoral fins, which can reach up to a third of their body length, humpback whales are migratory animals, making long journeys between colder waters, where they feed, and tropical regions, where they reproduce.
With an impressive size, reaching up to 16 meters in length and weighing around 40 tons, humpbacks are easily identified by their black coloration, white flippers and tail with unique black and white patterns, which vary from one individual to the next. These characteristics allow each whale to be uniquely identified.
Humpback whales feed mainly on krill, a small crustacean found in colder waters, and use sophisticated techniques to capture large quantities of this food, such as the famous “bubble net”, where they create a curtain of underwater bubbles to surround and capture their prey.

After the whale encounter, Adrián began to reflect on the incident and the significance of this unique experience. He expressed how the event was both terrifying and incredible.
“It was an encounter with wildlife in a remote place in the world,” he said. The Venezuelan also shared that the video recorded by his father helped him understand the magnitude of what happened, seeing for the first time the image of the huge whale close to him.
Adrián, who moved to Chile more than seven years ago with his father in search of a better life, never imagined that he would experience an event like this.
The incident not only left him physically intact, but also gave him a new perspective on wildlife and the natural world.
