Russians Create Unique V16 By Combining 16 Chainsaw Engines Into One Classic Car

Garage 54, a Russian workshop famous for its unusual automotive modifications, has taken the boundaries of creativity to a new level by developing a Lada with a V16 engine made from chainsaw engines.

This ambitious project exemplifies the almost limitless potential for innovation, proving that even an unassuming old sedan can be transformed into a unique and extraordinary creation.

The project began with the selection of 16 chainsaws manufactured by a relatively unknown brand called Hüter. Each saw was disassembled, and their engines were rearranged to form a single V-shaped unit, inspired by exotic supercars.

This “V” shape is not only an aesthetic choice, but also a functional one, as it allows the engines work in sync. Garage 54 engineers built a custom frame to house the engines, each driving a metal rod through gears welded to their crankshafts.

The accelerator pedal connects all 16 cylinders via a series of cables, while the steering wheel, starter motor and manual transmission remain in the original Lada standard.

After overcoming several initial setbacks, the engine started with characteristic blue smoke, marking the success of one of the most eccentric automotive adaptations ever made.

The task of installing the engine in the Lada required more than technical skills: mechanics had to cut the front of the vehicle, lengthen it and weld it back together to accommodate the 51-inch-long engine. The result is an unusual and fascinating appearance, as the car was kept without a hood, displaying the improvised engine at the front.

Modest power for a highly creative engine

Each chainsaw has a displacement of 58 cubic centimeters and generates about 4,5 horsepower, which, multiplied by 16, results in a 16 cc V928 engine rated at 72 horsepower. For comparison, the most powerful engine available in older Lada sedans was a 1,7-liter four-cylinder with up to 80 horsepower.

Although this creation does not present a significant gain in power, the execution and originality of the engine make the project a true work of art.

The torque limitation means the Lada V16 chainsaw isn’t exactly fast, but it does the job of moving under its own power. It takes just over 26 seconds to reach 60 km/h, a modest performance that underscores the experimental and creative nature of the work.

While it may not match conventional cars in terms of speed, creating a V16 engine from chainsaw engines demonstrates an unusual ability to adapt common components into a complex and functional structure.

Garage 54 and the Fascination with Eccentric Modifications

This isn't Garage 54's first bold project. The shop has already created a Lada truck with 14 wheels and a Lada equipped with metal legs, showing that its inventions are as eccentric as they are ingenious. This series of creations has cemented Garage 54 as a reference in the world of unusual automotive modifications.

For enthusiasts looking for real performance, there are examples of converted Ladas with powerful engines. In 2019, a special project installed a 2,0-horsepower 400-liter turbo-four engine from a Lancia Delta Integrale into a Lada, including chassis components from a BMW E36. Another example is a modified Lada 2105 with a Toyota 2JZ engine, which was auctioned for an impressive $40.000.

The Lada V16 chainsaw stands out for its ingenuity, showing that passion and imagination are key to creating unique vehicles. Although this unlikely machine is not designed for high speeds, it is an iconic example that creativity in the automotive world can still push the boundaries and amaze the public.
