The launch of the Fiat Pulse and Fastback hybrids has sparked curiosity: is the investment worth it? See the consumption and cost analysis, understand the pros and cons of these SUVs that seek to reduce consumption and emissions in Brazil.

In times of growing concern for sustainability and fuel economy, Fiat introduces the Pulse and Fastback hybrids, bringing to the Brazilian market the promise of reducing emissions and consumption.

Green technology, a bet by stellantis, seeks to attract drivers with a more efficient approach.

However, the cost-benefit is questionable: A recent study reveals that the extra fuel savings only offset the amount invested after up to 10 years of use. Is this initial investment really worth it?

Key facts about hybrid models

Stellantis has launched the first national Fiat cars with mild hybrid technology: the Fiat Pulse and Fastback T200 Hybrid.

These models, which integrate a mild hybrid system, start from R$ 125.990 for Pulse and R$ 151.990 for the Fastback, with an increase of R$ 2.000 compared to traditional versions, without electrification.

Models and pricesVersionPrice (R $)

Impetus T200 Hybrid AT140.990
FastbackAudace T200 Hybrid AT151.990
Impetus T200 Hybrid AT161.990

These hybrids have T200 1.0 turbo flex three-cylinder engine, with power of up to 130 hp and 20,4 kgfm torque.

The mild hybrid system is coupled to a 12V battery to help save fuel, and both models are equipped with simulated seven-speed CVT automatic transmission, aiming for smooth gear changes and greater economy.

Fuel consumption and economy

Fiat promises reduction in consumption With these hybrid models, however, improvements in consumption figures are modest.

A Autoesporte analyzed urban and highway consumption of both models, in versions with and without electrification, using both gasoline and ethanol. See the data:

Consumption (km/l)ModelUrban (Gasoline)Road (Gasoline)Urban (Ethanol)Road (Ethanol)
Pulse 1.0TConventional12,114,48,410,2
Hybrid13,414,49,310,2
Fastback 1.0TConventional11,914,68,410,2
Hybrid12,613,98,99,8

The Pulse and Fastback hybrid models show small performance improvements with urban use, where the hybrid system is able to provide slight assistance, especially during deceleration and stops.

How much does it cost to run on gasoline and ethanol?

Based on ANP data from 2024, with average price of R$6,09 per liter of gasoline and R$4,04 per liter of ethanol, the annual expenses of a driver who travels, on average, were calculated 15.000 km per year. Below are the estimated costs for the Pulse and Fastback models:

Annual cost of gasoline

ModelUrban Route (10.500 km)Road route (4.500 km)Annual Total (R$)
Pulse 1.0T5.286,121.906,177.192,29
Hybrid Pulse4.774,561.906,176.680,73
Fastback 1.0T5.371,381.875,727.247,10
Hybrid Fastback5.072,971.973,167.046,13

Annual cost of ethanol

ModelUrban Route (10.500 km)Road route (4.500 km)Annual Total (R$)
Pulse 1.0T5.050,001.781,646.831,64
Hybrid Pulse4.561,161.781,646.342,80
Fastback 1.0T5.050,001.781,646.831,64
Hybrid Fastback4.767,201.854,366.621,56

The differences between annual supply costs indicate a modest economy: with gasoline, the Pulse Hybrid saves R$511,56 per year compared to the combustion model.

In the case of the Fastback, the annual savings are R$ 200,97. With ethanol, the values are similar, with a difference of R$ 488,84 for Pulse and R$ 210,08 for the Fastback.

When does the investment pay off?

To understand when the investment of R$ 2.000 becomes advantageous, the value was divided by the annual savings of each model. The results indicate:

ModelAnnual Savings (Gasoline)Payback Time (years)
Hybrid Pulse511,564
Hybrid Fastback200,9710
ModelAnnual Savings (Ethanol)Payback Time (years)
Hybrid Pulse488,844
Hybrid Fastback210,0810

Is investing in hybrids worth it?

The Fiat Pulse and Fastback hybrids promise savings, but the additional value takes time to justify.

In the case of the Pulse, savings start to be felt after four years, whether using gasoline or ethanol. The Fastback, on the other hand, will require a wait of approximately 10 years for the owner to really feel the difference in their pocket.

This reality raises the question of whether investing in a mild hybrid is advantageous for those seeking short-term fuel savings.

While some drivers may value hybrid technology for its sustainability, for others, choosing a mild hybrid model may not offer a satisfactory financial return in the short term.

After all, in your opinion, reader, does the fuel savings justify the extra expense? Leave your opinion in the comments!

In states where there is a difference in the IPVA charge for electrified vehicles, it should be worth it. In the case of RJ, it drops from 4% to 1,5% of the FIPE value.

In the Federal District, for example, there is an exemption from IPVA, which represents 2%. In numbers, there is an approximate saving of R$3.200,00 per year, considering the Fastback of R$161.000,00.
Savings greater than investment.

For those who live in Minas Gerais, I believe it will be worth it. The two hybrid models will be exempt from IPVA, which could result in an annual saving of up to 6000 reais, considering the Fastback Hybrid.
