Innovation in reflection: Hong Kong researchers present more efficient and sustainable solution
As the extreme temperatures become more frequent globally, the use of air conditioning grows, impacting both the global warming as much as light number of consumers.
However, a new solution developed by researchers at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology can change this scenario.
They perform a system of REFRIGERAÇAO which promises to be more sustainable and efficient, using innovative principles to cool environments without increasing pollution.

The challenges of air conditioning and its consequences
According to International Energy Agency , the consumption of the energy to cool buildings is expected to more than double by 2050, instructing the need for greater electricity generation, not always from clean fonts.
Furthermore, the systems of air conditioning conventional refrigerants use refrigerant gases such as HFCs, which are significantly more important than environment than carbon dioxide, contributing to the greenhouse effect and the formation of urban heat islands.
The innovation of elastocaloric devices
Hong Kong researchers have developed a system of elastocaloric cooling which stands out for being 48% more efficient than previously tested technologies.
This device works by applying mechanical force to solid materials such as alloys. nickel-titanium , which change shape and temperature in response to this force.
This method of REFRIGERAÇAO eliminates the need for toxic gases, making it a more organic farming and at the same time decreasing the light contact of users.
Operation and benefits of the new system
The effect elastocaloric occurs when the shape of a solid material changes reversibly under mechanical pressure, resulting in heating or cooling.
The technique, discovered in the 1980s, was successfully applied by the Chinese team in a device that uses three alloys with different phase transition temperatures.
These alloys operate at the cold, intermediate and hot ends, providing a system of REFRIGERAÇAO efficient and sustainable .
Promising future for air conditioning technology
Although this innovation is not yet commercially available, research published in Nature Energy highlights its potential to replace the air conditioning traditional in several applications, even optimizing the performance of electric vehicle batteries.
With several researches underway around the world, the devices elastocaloric represent a significant step towards a REFRIGERAÇAO more sustainable and efficient.
Hong Kong researchers are optimistic that in the future this technology could establish itself as a viable solution and organic farming in the air conditioning market, offering a promising alternative to air conditioning traditional and contributing to a greener planet.
