In an unexpected decision, John Deere laid off around 150 employees in Horizontina after a period of collective vacations, suggesting a crisis in the agricultural sector. The Metalworkers Union regrets the situation and promises to continue seeking solutions for workers.
While many Brazilian workers were resting during their well-deserved vacations, something unexpected was being prepared behind the scenes at one of the giants of the agricultural sector.
A John Deere, renowned manufacturer of agricultural machinery, shocked the market with an abrupt and devastating decision: a mass layoff at the Horizontina unit, Rio Grande do Sul. What could be behind such a drastic decision in a period that should be one of stability?
According to sources close to the company and the Metalworkers Union, the decision was taken after long negotiations and efforts to avoid this outcome.

In March, lay-off measures were approved, and around 300 jobs appeared to be protected. However, despite the efforts and collective holidays granted later, low demand and stagnant production ended up determining the fate of many workers.
John Deere, through its communications department, reported that does not officially disclose the number of affected employees, following its internal policy. This lack of transparency only increased speculation and uncertainty among workers and the local community.
The acting president of the Horizontina Metalworkers Union, Alexandro Bach, deeply regretted the dismissals and emphasized the significant impact these layoffs will have on workers’ families and the local economy.
"We are offering all necessary support to workers in this difficult time.”, declared Bach. The Union reinforced its commitment to seek solutions that minimize the social and economic impacts of these layoffs.
According to unofficial information, around 150 employees were fired.. This number, although not confirmed by the company, reflects the seriousness of the situation.
What the layoffs mean
Layoffs at John Deere Brazil could signal a deeper crisis in agricultural sector, which, until then, seemed resistant to the economic turbulence affecting other industries.
The Metalworkers Union ensures that it will continue working to create new employment opportunities and dialoguing with the parties involved to ensure the best for the workers and the community of Horizontina.
