Single Federation of Oil Workers (FUP) will be present at the important G20 Social Summit with a panel that will focus on the fair energy transition. This meeting, scheduled for November 14, 2024, in the heart of the city of Rio de Janeiro, aims to address the relevance of a transition that not only responds to environmental demands, but is also sensitive to social impacts, promoting inclusive development and equity in access to new forms of energy.
During the event, the need for effective strategies for a just energy transition, which takes into account adequate financing to address the challenges of energy poverty. Just Energy Transition and Sustainable Development
The event entitled 'Fair, sovereign and popular energy transition for the sustainable development of humanity' will take place at Espaço Kobra, located in the port area of Rio de Janeiro, from 11 am to 13 pm. During this panel, the importance of a fair energy transition will be the focus, especially with respect to the impacts, both direct and indirect, on workers and local communities. These groups need to be actively involved and fully participate in this process. Deyvid Bacelar, who is the general coordinator of FUP, emphasizes the need for basic criteria for this fair energy transition to be effectively implemented.
According to Bacelar, it is crucial that the transition considers a industrial policy and sovereign energy, aimed mainly at countries in the Global South. The search for innovative solutions to enable the financing of this just transition. One of the major proposals is the creation of sovereign wealth funds, which would be supplied by industrial sectors that make a substantial contribution to the GDP. The oil and natural gas sector, which represents about 10% of Brazil's industrial GDP, for example, needs to be engaged in this transition effort, together with the sectors responsible for the greatest greenhouse gas emissions.
Petrobras’ Role in the Just Energy Transition
Petrobras, recognized as the largest Brazilian company, is urged to lead the energy transition process, with a significant increase in investment in renewable energy. Bacelar regrets that, in the third quarter of the current year, investments em decarbonisation and new low-carbon technologies were insufficient, according to the financial and operational results released the previous week. This panel is part of the self-managed activities program and was one of the chosen ones among the 852 entries from more than 2.100 organizations from 90 countries, all submitted for the G20 Social Summit.
The event aims to foster engagement against energy poverty and in favor of food safety, thus facing the adverse effects of climate crisis, especially in the most vulnerable territories and populations. Promoting the Just Energy Transition agenda in the Global South is one of the central goals. For the first time, parallel activities will be held at the summit of the world's main economic leaders, with the aim of amplifying voices and collecting proposals from different populations, focusing on central themes on the global stage, such as the eradication of hunger, the reduction of inequalities, climate change and the just energy transition.
Proposals for a Sovereign Industrial and Energy Policy
This innovative event was conceived by President Lula and proposed when Brazil assumed the presidency of the G20. The proposals were submitted to the Brasil Participativo platform by FUP, in collaboration with other entities such as the Plataforma Operária e Camponesa da Água e da Energia (POCAE), the Central Única dos Trabalhadores (CUT), the Central dos Trabalhadores e Trabalhadoras do Brasil (CTB), among others. The list includes several trade union organizations and social movements, such as the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem-Teto (MTST), the Movimento dos Atingidos por Barragens (MAB), among others, all committed to contributing to a just energy transition.
