This data on job creation is part of the new edition of the “Logistic Operator Profile”, produced by ABOL in partnership with ILOS. Sector also achieved ROB of R$166 billion and collected R$44 billion last year.

In 2021, Logistic Operators – OLs recorded Gross Operating Revenue – ROB of R$ 166 billion and guaranteed 2 million jobs, between direct and indirect, equivalent to 2% of the total employed persons in Brazil. In addition, they raised BRL 44 billion in taxes, demonstrating their relevance for national economic development. The figures are part of the 2022 edition of the 'Profile of the Logistic Operator' study, commissioned from the Institute of Logistics and Supply Chain – ILOS by the Brazilian Association of Logistic Operators – ABOL. The survey also produces details on the importance, evolution and role of the sector, maps challenges and concerns of companies and brings more visibility and information to the market.

The result confirms a 2021 marked by the recovery and growth of OLs: 391 million tons transported and BRL 18 billion in investment. Held since 2014 and with the latest version released in 2020, it points to an increase, in the last two years, in the presence of Operators in different regions of the country. In addition, it highlights the expansion of its sectoral coverage within the supply chain, serving a greater number of customers in various segments, such as e-commerce.

The survey included a universe of 1 companies – including ABOL associates – that met the ILOS prerequisites (based on the National Classification of Economic Activities – CNAE and the services offered). “In addition to broadening the base, we divided the companies into small, medium and large sizes to understand the issue of generating revenue. empregos about their perspective, revealing the behavior of each group before, for example, the Brazilian political and economic scenario”, highlighted the Executive Director of ABOL, Marcella Cunha.

Coverage

The activities of the OLs cover the five national regions, where 37% of the respondents to the questions are located. Even since the 2020 edition of the survey, there has been an increase in the regional performance of the OLs, going from 25% to 44% in the North, 43% to 58% in the Northeast, 37% to 62% in the Midwest, 63% to 75% in the South and from 92% to 97% in the Southeast. The answers reveal a search for national action, despite the existence of regional Logistics Operators, concentrated, above all, among small companies that also generate jobs in this modality.

The growth in the serviced sectors was also verified by the study. Compared to 2020, the presence of Operators increased by 12% in the cosmetics area, 16% in e-commerce, 14% in Cleaning Products and 12% in Industrial Technology and Services.

The survey also shows that, although national logistics operators have a clear preference for operating in segments with high added value, there is a tendency to expand. “In the case of e-commerce, the increasing presence of OL – one of the consequences of the pandemic – is related to the market’s potential to bring a lot of volume to a niche that is growing at higher rates than other sectors”, explains Marcella .

Investments

The main activities carried out by the OLs are Closed Road Transport, General Warehouse and Crossdocking. The questionnaire revealed that 94% of the OLs carry out joint Transport and Warehousing operations. And this occurs for 44% of the load.

When talking about profit and cost, the losses caused by the difficulties faced in recent months, such as the fuel crisis, are wide open. The study makes it clear that although the profit margin has increased for most, it has not kept pace with revenue growth at the same level. In addition, companies stated that they were unable to pass on all costs to the price of the service. To get around the obstacles, which also involve the coronavirus pandemic, Operators (59%) increased investments, reveals the study.

The funds were allocated, above all, to the modernization of facilities and infrastructure and software, prioritizing technological integration with customers and suppliers. There was also a strong trend towards investments in startups and logtechs by almost half of Operators last year.

Small and Medium

The survey also clarifies that the strategy of the smaller LOs is to reduce costs, the medium ones is to gain market share and the larger ones is to improve the service. Most Logistics Operators want to stand out in the market for the flexibility and customization of their operations. Speed and price are not the target of differentiation, being more seen as enablers for the service. Integration with the customer, technology and automation, the level of service and productivity are the main points of focus for the development of the activity.

The largest OLs appear at the forefront of the sector, both in carrying out the service and in the objective of bringing economic results more quickly to the market and to the country as a whole.

Sustainable initiatives, workforce qualification and hiring of employees, primarily via the CLT, were other points highlighted in the survey. “The development of ESG areas has also been increasing in Brazil as a worldwide trend, as there is an understanding that businesses need to sustain themselves in the long term. In this sense, we observe progress within organizations, with the large ones in the lead, and the small ones following, focusing on growth”, analyzed the ABOL executive.

elections

In an election year, the OLs expect greater government action to reduce Tax Burden and improvement of infrastructure, with a focus on highways, road infrastructure in medium and large cities and access to urban centers. When it comes to the recognition of the activity, the Operators were attentive to PL 3757/2020, which aims to regulate the function of the OL and is being processed by the National Congress.

The financial losses resulting from the stoppage of truck drivers were also part of the questionnaire, given the frequent manifestations made by the category with a direct impact on the routine of the OLs. For 38% of respondents, downtime is almost never recoverable. For the others, it takes about four days to recover from a day of demonstration.

“The survey allows for a broad understanding of the sector, highlighting its particularities and macro needs, especially after two years of the pandemic and other obstacles along the way that compromised the international Supply Chain. We can say that resilience is the main characteristic of the OLs, since there was recovery and desire for development and innovation”, concluded Marcella.
