Facebook mogul Mark Zuckerberg is building a multi-million dollar fortress. Covering 500 hectares and with tight security, the bunker impresses with its self-sufficiency and luxurious infrastructure.
The island of Kauai, Hawaii, has become the stage for a colossal undertaking led by none other than Mark Zuckerberg, the billionaire founder of Facebook and current CEO of Meta.
Although the paradisiacal environment suggests tranquility, the reason behind building a gigantic bunker, with more than 500 hectares and an investment of more than 1,3 billion dollars, raises questions.
After all, what led Zuckerberg to build this true survival fort?
- Important highway (BR) will be renovated and selection to fill job vacancies on the project already has a start date
- Japan to cut working hours so workers can focus on having children
- Construction of the world's longest and deepest road tunnel will cost an incredible R$277 BILLION! The monumental construction will cut a 21-hour journey in half
- China's Golden Bridge: The 4.134-meter, 12-lane giant that transforms Wuhan!
The island of Kauai: much more than just a paradisiacal setting
In 2014, Zuckerberg acquired the first land on the island of Kauai, a place known for its stunning landscapes, immortalized in productions such as Jurassic Park e Pirates of the Caribbean.
From the beginning, the purchase was controversial. In addition to impacting the small community of 73 inhabitants, which depends mainly on tourism, the presence of a billionaire brought a series of restrictions on access to the acquired areas.
According to information from the Change.org, a petition that surpassed one million signatures criticized Zuckerberg's attempt to limit public access and the possible consequences of his project for the local ecosystem.
Even so, the project continued, taking on more shape and impressive dimensions.
Colossal complex: more than a dozen buildings and maximum security
At over 500 hectares, Zuckerberg's compound is approximately 65 times larger than Buckingham Palace. and includes a monumental structure that goes far beyond a simple residence.
According to reports from international media outlets, the project involves a dozen buildings, including two central mansions with elevators, offices, conference rooms, and an industrial kitchen.
The structure was built with the aim of self-sufficiency, being able to shelter dozens of people in the event of major crises.
Stunning details of Zuckerberg's bunker
The bunker is one of the largest and best equipped ever built by a civilian.
The facilities offer self-catering accommodation and have a series of features that guarantee a luxurious and safe experience:
Area of 500 hectares: The extension bought by Zuckerberg It is colossal, representing a space capable of housing complex structures and large areas of vegetation.
Two central mansions: Each mansion has 30 bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as an industrial kitchen, large offices and conference rooms.
Space for relaxation and leisure: Among the buildings, a complete gym, sauna, jacuzzi, spa, swimming pool and tennis court are available, forming a true luxury retreat.
Sustainable structure: With large water reservoirs, areas dedicated to agriculture and livestock, and self-sufficient energy systems, the complex is prepared to remain operational independently of external resources.
Tree houses and rope bridge: Eleven disc-shaped houses were built in trees, connected by rope bridges, which provides privacy and direct contact with the surrounding nature.
Escape tunnel and underground bunker: The central mansions are interconnected by a tunnel that leads to a 500 square meter bunker, complete with engine room and an escape hatch.
Secrecy, investment and security
The secrecy surrounding the project is absolute. Under strict confidentiality agreements, hundreds of workers were employed on the project, the exact details of which remain unknown.
According to local sources, the construction cost of the complex exceeds 92 million euros, while the total value of the land acquired by Mark Zuckerberg is estimated at 156 million euros, representing the largest private work ever undertaken in Kauai.
To deal with criticism and distrust from the local population, Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, adopted a stance of supporting the community, contributing significant donations to local projects and organizations.
Still, security measures and restrictions on access to the site continue to be the subject of controversy.
Mark Zuckerberg and the future: fear or prevention?
Mark Zuckerberg's investment raises questions about why there is so much preparation.
Billionaires like him see global challenges from a different perspective, seeking solutions that offer security in times of crisis.
In a recent statement, Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan expressed their desire to preserve Kauai's natural beauty, mentioning that less than 1% of the acquired area will be urbanized.
What does this mean for the Kauai community?
Although Zuckerberg has contributed financially to the community, many question the environmental impact of his work.
The purchase and restriction of areas previously used for common use and the removal of local tourism, essential to Kauai's economy, are frequently debated points.
According to the newspaper Folha de S. Paulo, in addition to philanthropy and the promise to preserve native vegetation, the couple committed to carrying out conservation and agricultural and livestock development actions.
For some, this represents a chance to strengthen the local economy with a new type of investment; for others, it is a cultural and social departure from the collaborative spirit of the island.
However, lawsuits and petitions continue, revealing that many residents see the project as a threat to Kauai's identity and environmental preservation.
